John died at the age of 77 on 30 January 1885 in Dandridge, Jefferson, Tennessee, USA.[1] A brief notice appeared in the local newspaper:[13]

"John Seabolt Sr. died very suddenly, at his home, last Friday, about 10 o'clock. Deceased was in his usual health, that morning, and was assisting his son George about the barn, being engaged at that time, in digging a hold to set in a post, when becoming suddenly faint he sat down on a stone, and in a minute dropped over dead. It is thought he died of heart disease. He was 73 years old."

John was buried in the Hopewell Presbyterian Cemetery in Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee.[14]

Research Notes

John Seabolt may have been the young man by that name living in nearby Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1830. That person's household in the census that year included a male over 20, a female aged 16-20, plus a male and female child. Our man's only son was born about 1835, so this apparent family unit may have been composed of other relatives, or it could have described a different person entirely. The unusual surname and the fact that John's son married into a family with strong ties to Hawkins County are the only clues that link our John Seabolt to this document.[15]
