Biography

JOSHUA SEALE was born 26 Mar 1775[1] in Camden District, South Carolina.

Joshua married Ellender Hazeltine 1797 in Anson County, North Carolina.

Joshua Seale is listed as being a member of the Sions Lodge #6, in Fairfield County, South Carolina in 1799.
In 1811, he sold all of his possessions except for a few slaves, moving his family, wife and 6 children, to Tennessee. They remained there for one year "to make a crop." In 1812, they located in the Territory of Mississippi (which did not become a State until 1817) along with brother, Daniel and first cousin Thomas Seale, where he purchased a section of land situated on the North (west?) side of the Pearl River in Marion County, Mississippi.
About 1845, he and Ellender moved from Mississippi to Union Parish, Louisiana. There they joined the Antioch Baptist Church. This church also received Joshua's slave Richard "Dick" Seale into membership.[2]
He then moved to Jasper County in about 1850 with their son Lewis Seale and a number of slaves. His plantation was located west of Jasper Texas in the Indian Creek community near Bevilport. Richard Seale and other slaves in the area would gather under the Beech trees to worship. In 1853 Joshua and Richard built the first known protestant church for people of color west of the Mississippi, the Dixie Baptist Church . Both were in their 80's upon this move. Both are buried in the Indian Creek Cemetery on the North Bank near Jasper, Texas. .[3]
Joshua and Ellender Seale are listed on the 1860 Jasper County, Texas Census. He was listed with the occupation of Farmer. Joshua and Ellender Hazeltine-Seale are buried in Jasper County, Texas at the Indian Creek Comm. Cemetery north of Bevilport, Texas.

Death

Joshua died in 1864.
A marker next to Joshua's grave marker is inscribed: "To the memory of Rev. Richard Seale and his wife Phyllis, b. abt. 1810 d. abt 1890. "Uncle Dick & Aunt Phyllis" came to Texas with the Seale's and founded Dixie Church about 1/2 mile south of the cemetery. They remained with the Seale's and did church work as long as they lived." Richard and Phyllis Seale were negro slaves of Joshua and Ellender and remained with them after the Civil War.
All burials at Indian Creek Cemetery were removed to Jasper City Cemetery, Jasper, Jasper Co, TX when Lake Sam Rayburn was constructed. The headstones appear to be replacements, and cite US census for birth years.[4]

Seale-657 and Seale-24 appear to represent the same person because: Charles and Lydia only had one son named Joshua. No primary sourced data in Seale-657
