Biography

From the "Southland":

“Wyatt Henry was born in the country home about 6 miles east of Marquez. Henry, as he was called at home, was reared on the farm and under the conditions prevailing in this country in farm life. He received the training in the country school and as he approached manhood entered the Jewett high school… After one year of assistance by his father, young Seale with a stout manly heart refused further help and taught between terms and finished his school life on his own resources, and when he left the school room he had a state certificate to teach and his services as teacher were greatly in demand. … He attended Memphis Hospital Medical College and graduated there on his 25th birthday. He came back to Leon county and located in Marquez. In Dec 1889 he married Miss Beulah Johnson who was also reared in Leon County. One year before her marriage her parents moved to Kerr County and the wedding took place in Kerr County. They began married life in Marquez but in ’[18]96 Mrs. Seale’s health failed and they moved west for her health and after five years it was sufficiently recovered to come back to the old Leon County home. They came again therefore to Marquez in Nov. 1900 and the Doctor is growing into a most excellent practice. He is a church man and Christian worker and stands for the high side of life. He enjoys the friendship of a wide circle of friends and is one of Leon County’s representative men. They have three children and a comfortable home in Marquez.”[4]

Dr. Seale was living in Center Point, Texas in September 1900, as he was called from there to the deathbed of his father, Wyatt Stark Seale. They apparently moved back to Marquez shortly after that.

Early Marquez office buildings, since demolished.
Wyatt Holt Seale (Wyatt Henry Seale's son) recalls: “[in Marquez]….the old two-story frame building where your uncle Jim Powell and Dr. Seale ran a drugstore in 1889-1890. The upstairs of that building was used, most of the time, as doctors’ offices – by old Dr. Boggs, Dr. E O Boggs, Dr. Wilson, Dr. Seale, and others. Some good medicines and certainly some bad were practiced in those offices.”[5]. (These buildings in Marquez have been gone since the 1990's, (Newer view of Marquez, 2008), (RHSeale)

“Dr. Seale was a small man, always wore a mustache clipped short, was always kind. As far back as I can remember, he had Model T cars, buying a new one occasionally and kept it parked at the corner drug store on Main Street. As he grew older he spent hours sleeping in his car, just going home for lunch and about 5 o’clock at night. He never had an office, treated his patients in the back of the drug store.”[6]

Death

Dr. Wyatt Henry Seale died 17 Jun 1932 in Marquez. [7]

His obituary from the Normangee Star quotes, in part:
“Twenty years ago when we first came to Leon, one of the first and most appreciated friends we met was Dr. Seale... We have always found him a friend, and have always valued the friendship. Dr. Seale, during his active life, was a man of influence in the county, and an active supporter of what he felt to be for the betterment of its people. Full of life and energy, he has made the world with which he came in contact better for his having lived. During his latter years his health has been steadily failing, and he has been unable to keep up the gait of earlier years. His love for his church work has never flagged, and he was always ready to carry his part and more in any matter that was for the moral and religious uplift.”[8]

Also:
“For near forty years he was a member of this one church, helping to build for her two houses of worship. For more than thirty years he was the Superintendent of the Sunday School. A more faithful man in his attendance and eery other sort of help it has never been my privilege to labor with. In his young manhood he taught school in Leon County, then went to Memphis to study medicine. Receiving his degree, he returned to his own people, and with the exception of just a few years in Southwest Texas, served them until his death. He was always to be found on the side of right as he knew it. No man ever had to question where he stood on a question of public or private morality; his position was already known. He had many adversaries, but no enemies…. [9]
