Biography

Maxine was born in 1934 to Floyd and Maggie Jones Searcy. She was the fifth of nine children born to the couple. She and her family lived a very simple farming life in Skyland, NC. When not doing chores, Maxine liked to play practical jokes on her siblings and friends. She liked to climb trees and play in streams close to her home. She was very close to her brother, Claude. They were inseparable.

Maxine developed into a beautiful young girl and caught the eye of many boys. She knew John Huntsinger from childhood and they dated. They were married and had a son Johnny by him, and another child whom was stillborn. That union was a violent one, and John left his family to join the military. Maxine and John were divorced and she lived with her parents with Johnny. Floyd and Maggie adored him.

Maxine found a job at a laundry service in Asheville. She met her future second husband, Alvin, there. They immediately hit it off and got married on November 27, 1956 in Leicester, NC. They moved back to Landis, NC with Susan and Maxine's son Johnny. Johnny was given the Cook name by Alvin and he raised him as his own. Steve came along in 1957, then Karen in 1958, and finally Randy in 1960.

Times were hard for Maxine now and then. She worked a lot to contribute to the household. Raising five children was difficult, but she loved every minute of it. She would escape the daily toils by working her garden or crocheting. She loved going to yard sales and had a keen eye for beautiful things. She knew what it meant to save a penny, but she did like to spend some things on herself. Her favorite place in the world to be was at the beach. She could walk the shore and be at peace.

Maxine and Alvin found themselves raising their granddaughter, Shasta. They were fine with it and experienced at it raising five children. They doted on her and loved her as if she were their own child. Shasta remains loyal to their memory.

She was excited to learn she was going to be a great-grandmother to Shasta's baby in 1997. She bought and made many baby items. Sadly, Maxine became very sick in February 1998. She passed away from complications of her diabetes and heart disease. She did not see the birth of her first great-grandson.

She was buried at West Lawn Cemetery in China Grove, NC next to her husband, Alvin.

Her great-grandson Nickolas was born a month and a day after her passing.
