Biography

Philip Searle, baptized at Ottery St. Mary, Devon, England on 15 August 1633, was the son of John Searle^[1] and Margaret Channon.^[2]

Philip married Hannah Salter on 28 September 1657 at Ottery St. Mary^[2][3] (banns posted 21 August 1657).^[4] They had the following children, all baptized at Ottry St. Mary:

1. John, born 22 July, baptized 29 July 1658; married first Mary Ruggles and had children; married second Mary (Griggs) Fielder^[2]
2. Philip, born 1 March, baptized 2 March 1660/1; married Hannah Ellis and had children^[2]
3. Margaret, baptized 13 August 1664; married her cousin Ebenezer Searle^[2]
4. James, baptized 12 August 1668; died 11 April 1738 in Stonington, Connecticut^[2]

Philip arrived in New England with his family before 11 September 1671, when Francis Ball was fined for "entertaining his brother in law Philip Searle and his family in his house without license from the selectmen whose answer was that he was to speedily remove to Roxbury".^[2]

His wife, Hannah, died 16 December 1691 in Roxbury, Massachusetts.^[2][5] Philip remarried to Elizabeth ______, who died in Roxbury on 5 February 1708.^[2]

Philip Searle Sr. died 3 May 1710 at Roxbury.^[6] He left no will and there was no administration on his estate.^[2]
