Possible name corruption.
The modern surname of Earle or Erle may have at some point in the past been corrupted to Searle. There are several families with the surname of Earle or Erle in Devon in the 1400s and 1500s. A large number of Earle surname men that should be in the Devon records cannot be found and it may be due to the surname being changed (mis-spelled) to Searle. If some modern day Searle men who can trace their line to the Devon Searles could take a y-DNA test we might be able to know if there is a connection between the surenames.
