Biography

Gertrude was born Sept. 30, 1887, in Wyandotte County, Kansas. She was the daughter of Patrick Segraves and Louise Lee. Gertie had nine brothers: Al (1876-1900), Joe (1878-1953), William (1880-1882), Jesse (1882-1965), John (1888-1969), George (1892-1964), Pat (1895-1960), Victor (1898-1918), Harold "Jack" (1902-1959); and one sister, Effie (1885-1943). The family moved to Kentucky Township, Jefferson County, Kansas, where they farmed in the Kaw Valley.[1][2][3]

Gertie married Frank Patterson on Jan. 8, 1908, in Jefferson County, Kansas.[4] They had five children: Leo, Grace, Donald, Lamonte and Victor. Victor died shortly after his birth in 1918.[5]

In 1910, Frank and Gertie were living in Plymouth Township, Russell County, Kansas. Frank was a hired farm laborer and Gertie was a servant in a private home. Their employers were Samuel and Mary Shiltz.[6] In 1915, the family was living in Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas.[7] The family moved to Dorrance, Russell County, Kansas, about 1917.[8] They were living there at the time of Gertie's death.

Gertie passed away Feb. 18, 1919, in Rosedale Hospital, Wyandotte County, Kansas.[9] She is buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas.[10] Her four surviving children were sent to the Children's Home Society of Topeka in late 1920.[11]
