Biography

Private Ernest Sellers served in the United States Army in World War I
Service started: 21 Jul 1918
Unit(s): 159th Infantry
Service ended: 16 Apr 1919

Ernest was born 12 January 1894[1] in Cleveland County, NC to Thomas and Cora Etta (Black) Sellers. He was the oldest boy and the third child out of thirteen.

He was drafted in World War I[2] and sent to Camp Hancock, Augusta, Georgia 21 July 1918.[3]

While he was on the ship headed to France, Armistice was signed and he spent the rest of his service in France helping rebuild. He returned home on board the USS Luckenbach, arriving in Brooklyn, NY on April 5th, 1919 and was sent to Camp Greene with others from the 159th Infantry. He was discharged April 16th, 1919.[4]

At the time, it was customary for families of schoolchildren to give room and board to schoolteachers for a few weeks at a time. He was still living at home when Aubra Brown came to stay as the teacher of some of his younger siblings. They married after his return from France 26 June 1919.

They settled in her home town of Cherryville and raised their four children there.

Most of his life he drove an oil delivery truck (at first it was a wagon) for the National Oil Company, but he also had a farm and in later years he raised bees.

Because his older sister Mary had lived to be 102, that was a goal of his. He died a few weeks after his 102nd birthday on 1 February 1996.[5]

He is buried in Cherryville City Cemetery.[6]

Census Records

In 1900[7] and 1910[8] Ernest can be found in the Cleveland County censuses with parents Thomas and Cora Etta.

In 1920 he and Aubra can be found living on Church St in Cherryville. He is listed as "agent" for an oil company, and she was a teacher in a rural school.[9]

In 1930 they can be found living on Rural Route 2 in Cherryville along with three children. Ernest is again listed a salesman for an oil company.[10]

In 1940 Ernest is again shown as a salesman for the National Oil Company. All four children are living at home.[11]
