...As you already know from your census research, your Melissa Sellers was a daughter of Samuel Joseph Sellers and his wife Rebecca Fowler. What you apparently suspect but don't know for sure is that Samuel J. is the son of Samuel Sellers (1788-1857) and Sarah Stanaland (1786-1867), originally of Brunswick Co., NC, and by 1835, pioneers of what is today Bullock Co., AL (in 1850, still part of Pike Co.).
Samuel J.'s parentage, besides being suggested by the close proximity in the 1850 census, is proven by the elder Samuel's 1857 Pike Co. will (I have a copy), subsequent estate records, and by the Samuel Sellers Bible record, of which I have a transcript. The elder Samuel's parentage is demonstrated by the same Bible record, Elisha Sellers' 1813 estate settlement, and by every published work on the subject! Elisha, then, is a son of Benjamin...who left a will in Edgecombe Co. NC in 1761. Finally, deeds show that Benjamin was a son of a Matthew Sellers who died about 1740...

In the name of God, Amen, I, Elisha Sellers, of Brunswick County in the State of North Carolina, being weak of body but perfect mind and sound memory, calling to mind the mortality of my flesh, and that it is appointed unto all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in the form and manner following. First and principally, I recommend my soul to God who gave it, trusting in the merits of Christ for a Glorious Resurrection, and my body to be buried after a Christian manner at the discretion of my executors hereinafter named, nothing doubting but I shall receive the same again through the mighty power of God, and touching such worldly goods wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with, I give, devise, and bequeath in manner & form following:
First, I give unto my beloved wife, Mary Sellers, the use of the plantation whereon I now live, during her life or widowhood and after her death or marriage to revolve to my son John Bryant Sellers. Secondly, I give unto my daughters Sarah McClelland and Mary Singletary and my sons William Sellers, Thomas Sellers, Matthew Sellers, and Willets Sellers, and also to my daughter Ann Peoples Mints one shilling to each of them. Thirdly, I give unto my wife Mary Sellers her equal part of the remaining part of my property not hereinbefore given. I mean one child's part. Fourthly, it is my will and desire that the remaining part of my property may be equally divided between all the children which I have had or may hereafter have by said wife Mary, share and share alike. Fifthly, I give to my grandsons Elisha and William Sellers one heifer calf to each of them. Lastly, I nominate, constitute, and appoint my beloved wife Mary Sellers Executrix, my dutiful son Thomas Sellers and my friend John Conyers as executors to this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former wills by me heretofore made and ratifying and confirming this to be my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this sixteenth day of November one thousand eight hundred and one.
Elisha [X is mark] Sellers
Signed, sealed, published and declared to be the last will and testament of the testator in presence of us. Mary (X) Ramsay Drucilla (X) Churis(?) J. Gause, Jr.
The will was proven in the April 1813 session of the Brunswick Co. Court, and in that record, Mary [Elisha's widow], Thomas, Matthew, Willets, and Samuel Sellers, Henry Mintz, and Martha Perkins were listed as legatees. On April 10, 1813, the above legatees sold their rights to the land on Starboard Swamp to a Benjamin Sellers [probably their uncle or brother]. The deed of sale (in Deed Book H, pp. 459-460) refers to Elisha's will, in which the land was devised to John B. Sellers, Elisha's youngest son, and to the fact that John B. Sellers had died a minor.
