Biography

Ann was born in 1837 or 1838. She is recorded in the 1850 census in the home of her father, Clark Sewell, a blacksmith. Ann is the oldest of six children recorded in the home. Her mother almost certainly died, for the woman listed as Clark's wife - Phoebe Sewell - is only 26 years of age, making it very unlikely that she had a 12-year-old daughter. The other children are: Henry (9 years), Mary (6 years), Martha (4 years), William (2 years) and Louisa (3 months). Ann and Henry, as well as the adults, are recorded as having been born in Georgia; the remaining children in Alabama. None of the children had attended school within the previous year. The record was taken on December 11th 1850.

She is recorded in the 1880 Census in Bibb County, Alabama, in a household headed by her husband, whose occupation was given as farmer. Neither she nor her husband could read or write. With them in the household were four sons: John (age 13), Clark (age 9), James M. (age 7), and Frank (age 5). Only John had attended school within the last year. All the boys were born in Alabama.

Ann E. Longcrier is recorded in the 1910 Federal Census for District 107, Calf Creek Township, in Searcy County, Arkansas. At that time she was 72 years old and living with her 71-year-old husband, to whom she had been married for 50 years. She is recorded as the mother of 10 children, of whom 6 were then living. She is recorded to have been born in Georgia, as were both of her parents. This record was taken on 4 May 1910.

She died in 1912.
