"A Fatal Fall"
Edward Sexton, a well known and respected resident of Allegheny, met with a fatal accident Saturday evening at his home, No. 35 Locust street. He had been confined to his room all day by a slight illness, but towards night arose and dressed himself to take a short walk. On reaching the head of the stairway he was overcome by faintness, or his foot caught, and he fell headlong down the stairs, fracturing his skill against a door frame. Death resulted almost immediately. An inquest was held yesterday and a verdict of accidental death rendered.
Note: (note: I believe the Ed Sexton below is our Edward Sexton who operated a Stable/Livery in Washington Boro PA during the 1850's through mid 1870's. I could find no other Ed Sexton's in this town at this time).
Herewith The Reporter begins a series on the history of the National Pike in
Washington County which will provide interesting and informative reading. The
National Pike a glamour road in its own right--will be pictured in detail
as it was in the days when
Washington was a town of taverns and wagon stands with no less than 25 all
brought into existence by the National Pike. This seems inconceivable
today; but most of them were small, and there were many stage coach passengers
and Pike Boys constantly going and coming. I often wonder if even today with
all of the tourists that pass through are more or even as many as the heyday
of the National Pike.
Jack Bringle, of Washington, was one of the last men to drive a
stage in this section. When he drove for Ed Sexton between Washington
and Pittsburgh. It was he who drove the last stage out of Washington
upon the completion of the Chartiers Valley Railroad on May 18, 1871. An
enlarged photograph of this coach hangs in the George Washington Hotel.
The history of this coach is interesting. It was built right here
in Washington and was the first round bodied coach of the Concord type
ever constructed west of the Allegheny Mountains. Prior to that all coaches
made in Washington and elsewhere west of the mountains were the square type
later called hacks in this section and mud wagons in the west.
The Civil War had closed, and young Richard R. Forrest was home from
the army. He was without a jog, but he had learned coach building in
the Hayes shop before he enlisted. All of the coach builders here had
declared that a round bodied coach could not be built outside of Concord,
New Hampshire. For some reason they seemed to feel that Abbot Downing and
Company, of Concord, was the only firm that knew the secret of round-bodied
coach construction.
Young Forrest decided to prove that they were wrong for he could see
no reason why round-bodied coaches could not be constructed anywhere,
and so he set to work. This coach was built on a vacant lot beside John
Morrow’s wagon shop on East Wheeling street. Just across the street J.
Dallas Jackson, an old friend who had learned his trade at the Hayes Shop,
had started in business for himself. Jackson was a blacksmith as well as a
wagonmaker, and he ironed the couch and running gear. After it was completed
Forrest sold it to Ed Sexton. It was used on local runs on the National Pike,
then on the Pittsburg Pike and between here and Nova lock, and then on the
Waynesburg run.
Some time in the early 1870’s, Sexton sold it to one of the western
state lines. In those days all stage coaches were named, the name being
painted on the side with an appropriated picture being painted on the door.
This stage was called the “Queen of the Road.”
After the close of the Pittsburgh run in 1871, Brigle drove for Sexton
between Washington and Havelock, now McDonald, and when the railroad put
that out of business he was on the run between Washington and Waynesburg
until the completion of the Waynesburg and Washington Railroad in
October, 1877. After his stage coaching days were over he went to Missouri and
settled on a farm. In 1910 he returned to Washington to see old friends, but
found that most of them were dead. He went back to his Missouri
farm where
he died in April, 1916.
Alfred Mosebay, of Washington, was one of the few Negro stage drivers,
possibly the only one; but old-timers said that he was an expert at this
profession. I am not certain whether he ever drove on the National Pike,
but if he did it was on local lines after through travel ceased. He was employed
by Ed Sexton between Washington and Pittsburgh, and boasted that he hauled
more returning soldiers into Washington after the close of the Civil War
than any other driver on the road.
