Biography

Birth

Aseneath Sexton was born ca. 1784 in Dorset Township, Bennington County, Vermont.

The deed books for Dorset refer to "Assenath Washburn" as being an heir of "the Late William Sexton of Dorset" and to his widow "Dorothy Guile of Elizabethtown".[1]

Marriage

Aseneath married Stephen Washburn sometime before 1805.

Aseneath married Richard Johnston sometime after 1816.[2]

Census records

The 1805 List of Inhabitants of Lansdowne, Upper Canada records Aseneath as living in the household of Stephen Washburn.[3] The other members of his household listed in the census are Stephen Washburn’s children from his first marriage (Patience, Seneca, Amy and Jarvis), as well as Aseneath and Stephen’s first child Minerva.

The 1806 List of Inhabitants of Lansdowne[4] also records Aseneath as a member of the Stephen Washburn household, as do the 1807,[5] 1808,[6] 1810[7] 1811[8] and 1812[9] lists. Over the course of these censuses, the household expands to include the couple’s other children Amanda, William, Sexton and Henry Purdy Washburn.

The 1816 list[10] records the following members of the household:

  • Asena Washburn widow, age 32
  • Seneca, age 29
  • Jarvis, age 16
  • William, age 8
  • Saxtine, age 5
  • Henry, age 3
  • Manarvy, age 12 [only partially legible]

Washburn-435 and Sexton-19 appear to represent the same person because: both wife of Stephen Washburn and Mrs Washburn 435 has no identity so should become Asenath who has a name.
