Biography

The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Mary Seymour, Countess of Winchilsea, was born about 1628, the year her parents married.[1]

Lady Mary Seymour (d. 20 Nov 1672; bur. at Eastwell, co. Kent), was the 2nd dau. of William Seymour , 2nd Duke of Somerset, by his second wife Lady Frances Devereux, 1st dau. of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex.[1]

Mary was the sister of:[1]

  1. William Seymour, died young;
  2. Robert Seymour, died young;
  3. Henry Seymour, Lord Beauchamp, born 1630, died in France in 1654, married Mary, the daughter of Arthur, Lord Capel of Hadham;
  4. John Seymour, fourth Duke of Somerset;
  5. Edward Seymour, died young;
  6. Frances Seymour, who married 1) Richard, viscount Molyneux, 2) Thomas, Earl of Southampton, and 3) Conyers, Lord Darcy, later Earl of Holderness;
  7. Arabella Seymour, died unmarried;
  8. Jane Seymour, who married Charles Boyle, Lord Clifford of Lanesborough, son and heir of Richard Boyle, first Earl of Burlington and second Earl of Cork;

In 1649, Mary married 21 year-old widower, Heneage Finch, third Earl of Winchilsea sometimes known as the second Earl of Winchelsea (because the first holder of the title was a woman - Heneage's widowed grandmother), the ninth child and oldest surviving son of Thomas Finch, second earl of Winchilsea, and his wife, Cicely, the daughter of John Wentworth of Gosfield, Essex.[2]

Mary Finch, Countess of Winchilsea, died in 1672, after which her husband Heneage married on 10 April 1673, his third wife, Catherine, the daughter of Sir Thomas Norcliffe of Langton, Yorkshire, the widow of 1) Christopher LIster and 2) Sir John Wentworth, and after Catherine died in 1678, Heneage married his fourth wife on 29 October 1681, Elizabeth, the daughter and heir of John Ayres of London.[2]
