"Mary Ellen (Shaffer) Hawkins - Love Story

Handwritten notes by Mary Agnes (Morgan) Dick, granddaughter of Mary Ellen (Shaffer) Hawkins.
Great-grandmother Shaffer was a Shidler. The Shaffers lived at Terre Haute, Indiana and great-grandma, Sarah, did laundry for an itinerant school teacher who had just returned from Civil War duty. One day the teacher, O.S. Hawkins, jumped the yard fence and planted a kiss on her cheek just as daughter, Mary, rounded the corner. Mary said, "I wonder who that fool is?" O.S. teasingly said to her mother, "I'm going to marry that girl" and Mary said, "you are not" and flounced around the house. They were married within two weeks!"
Mary Ellen's parents turn out to be George G and Sarah (Shidler) Shaffer
Obituary:
Death Calls A Beloved Mother
Mrs. O.S. Hawkins Died Tuesday After 66 Years Residence Here. Mrs. O. S. Hawkins, aged 87, a kindly and much loved woman of this community, passed away early Tuesday morning on the farm northeast of town that she and her husband had homesteaded in 1873. She was the mother of a large family of children whose great love and tender care of her has been remarkable. Her birthday, Nov. 1, was always faithfully and happily observed and it was then that the children, husbands and wives as well as grandchildren gathered at her home for the annual family reunion. For one who had spent her early life with the hardships of the pioneer settler it was grand that her declining years should be surrounded by such devotion. That she lived past one more Mother's Day was a great satisfaction to her children.
The funeral of Mrs. Hawkins will be held from the Simmons-Rice Funeral Home this afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Harvey Hartman and interment will be made in the Fairview Cemetery.
Mary Ellen Shaffer Hawkins was born Nov. 1, 1851 at Huntington, Ind., and passed away May 16, 1939 at the home of her son, Benjamin, near Smith Center, Kans. at the age of 87 years, 6 months and 15 days. In her early childhood she moved with her parents to Valparaiso, Ind. and there lived to womanhood. On May 15, 1870, she was united in marriage to Orlando Sumner Hawkins who preceded her in death Feb. 15, 1906.
To this union twelve children were born, three of whom preceded their mother in death: Orlando Daily Hawkins, Mrs. Sophia Morgan and Mrs. Pearl Luther. Those living are George N. Hawkins of Atwood, Kans.; Mrs. Clara E. Burdell of Emmett, Ida; Jacob H. Hawkins, Akron, Colo.; Mrs. Lucetta Graham, Salem, Ore; Cynthia C. Mecham, Santa Margarit, Calif.; Mrs. Beulah Morgan, Mary, Benjamin, and Wardie Hawkins, all of Smith Center.
In the year of 1873 Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins immigrated to Smith Center in a covered wagon, enduring the hardships of the pioneer and did their part in building this community.
In sickness and in death Mrs. Hawkins was always ready to lend a helping hand. In early life she was united with the Free Methodist church and lived a devoted christian life, doing all she could for her Master. Mrs. Hawkins resided on her homestead until in October of the year of 1930 when she moved to Smith Center where she lived until March of this year. At that time she was taken back to her old home where her son, Benjamin, now resides and there she spent her last days which was her wish.
She was a loving mother, a kind neighbor and loved by all who knew her. She was an early member of Hope Rebekah Lodge, No. 47 of Smith Center, having joined in 1884. Besides her sons and daughters she leaves to mourn her departure, two brothers and two sisters: John Shaffer of Crown Point, Ind.; Joshua Shaffer, Mrs. Amanda Burdell and Mrs. Melvina O'Neal, all of Allegan, Mich. Also surviving are 45 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
