Note
Note: The earliest Shanks in IN public land records are Benjamin "of Montgomery Co, OH" in Sept of 1827 and Joseph "of Wabash Co, IN" both with land in Fountain Co. I haven't finished my search of residency (found only on the document itself) the Shanks but just a quick glance shows John Shanks' earliest date in 1831 in Carroll Co. There are many other entries for John Shanks during the 1830s and 40s in Parke, Carroll, Daviess counties. Don't know if these are all same man... helps to look at actual document for residency. Other Shanks listed were Abner (land in Carroll Co), Mathew (land in Greene Co) and Peter (land in Delaware.)
Sue Zobbe: Joseph and Benjamin Shanks were John Shanks' brothers. John Shanks actually entered the Carroll Co land in Oct 1829 and evidently went back to Miami Co, then the family probably moved in the summer or fall of 1830 after the census was taken.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Benjamin by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Benjamin:
