Biography

Henry Joseph was born in 1882. He was the son of Ada Emmaline & Robert James Shanks[1] He married Pearl Sefton in 1910 [2]

He served in the NZ Army during World War 1 (service number 36760 ) He gave his next of kin as Mrs A. Shanks (wife), of 57 Bordesley Street, Linwood, Christchurch, He embarked WW1 26 Jul 1917 arriving into Plymouth, Devon 24 September 1917 aboard HMNZT 90 the vessel was Ulimaroa . He was a Second Lieutenant in G Company of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade [3]

Pearl Shanks (Mr L. A. Dougall) applied for an order for maintenance to be issued against her husband, Henry Joseph Shanks (Mr P J Amodeo) on the ground that she was a destitute person. After hearing evidence the Magistrate stated that the defendant had acted in a most unhusbandly manner towards his wife. He had allowed her to live with his mother for several years, which was not the way a married man should treat his wife. His actions towards her seemed to suggest that he wished her to commit a breach of her marriage contract. Her application had been laid under the Destitute Persons Act, and as the complainant had been unable to proof that she was a, destitute person or that her husband had means, it would have to be dismissed. [4]

They were divorced in 1924 - Pearl Shanks, of Doyleston (Mr J. Upham) was granted a decree absolute against Henry Joseph Shanks, of 'Wellington, with custody of the one child of the marriage.[5] He married 2nd Beryl Bowles in 1931 [6] He passed away in 1951 age 69. [7] He was buried in Karori Cemetery.[8]
