Biography

1776 Project
Private William Shanks served with Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
William Shanks is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A102803.

William was born in 1747. Legend has it that he was born at sea in transit to the USA. And it's probably just that, a legend. His mother was from an old Maryland family and it's highly unlikely she ever went to sea. My guess is that he was born in Maryland or Pennsylvania, (where Thomas and Sarah (Rapier) Shanks are buried). He passed away in Lincoln County, Kentucky in 1817. (At least one of his children died in the New Madrid earthquake in 1811).

Note

William's DAR record says he was born on the Atlantic Ocean.
