Walter Shanly was a civil and consulting engineer and builder, who advised on many major engineering works in the 19th century. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in 1863 and, in 1867, to the House of Commons.
He died in 1899 and was buried at Saint Johns Cemetery, Arva, Ontario.
