Biography

Birth: Malinda was born March 26, 1852[1] in Hendricks County, Indiana. She was the seventh of ten children of Malinda Randel and James Sharp. She had four older brothers, two older sisters, a younger brother, and two younger sisters. Her mother called her Milla.[2]

1860 Census: "Malinda A. Sharp," 8, was living in Marion Township, Hendricks County, Indiana (New Winchester Post Office) with her parents, James, 47, and Malinda, 40, and siblings William, 21, George, 19, Elizabeth, 16, Nancy M., 14, James A., 12, Thomas M., 10, Joseph, 6, Matilda, 4, and Mary, 1. A William Sharp, 20, was also living with them - he may have been an accidental duplication of her oldest brother, or may be some other relative. She had attended school. [3]

1870 Census: "Malinda Sharp," 18, was living in Marion Township, Hendricks County, Indiana (New Winchester Post Office) with her parents, James, 57, and Malinda, 51, siblings James A., 20, Thomas A., 21, Joseph, 16, Matilda, 14, and Mary, 10, and two other family members, Thomas J. Sharp, 19, and Oscar Sharp, 5. She was listed born in Indiana. [4]

Married Isaac J. Mendenhall on November 10, 1870 in Hendricks County, Indiana. [5]

1880 Census: "Malinda Mendenhall," 29, was living in Clay Township, Hendricks County, Indiana, with her husband, Isaac, 30, and sons, Charley, 7, Wm, 5, and Letice, 3. She was listed as keeping house, born in Indiana, father born in Kentucky, mother born in Indiana. [6]

1900 Census: "Malinda M. Mendenhall," 48, was living in Union Township, Hendricks County, Indiana with her husband Isaac, 48, and children, Joletis, 22, James D., 18, and Gracy, 14. She was listed married 29 years, with 5 children born and 5 living, born in Indiana, father in Kentucky, and mother in Indiana. [7]

1910 Census: "Malinda Mendenhall," 58, was living in Union Township, Hendricks County, Indiana, with her husband Isaac J., 58, and son James N., 28. She was listed married 37 years (first marriage), 5 children born, 5 living, born in Indiana, father born in Kentucky, mother in Kentucky. [8]

1920 Census: "Malindia Mendenhall," 67, was living in Union Township, Hendricks County, Indiana with her son Charley, 47. She was listed as widowed, literate, born in Indiana, father born in Kentucky, mother born in Kentucky, working as housekeeper in own home. [9]

Died on September 25, 1929 in Beech Grove, Marion County, Indiana at the age of 77.

In 1908, her mother wrote the following in her memoir: "Milla or Malinda M., our 3rd daughter, was born Mar. 26, in year 1852. She married to Isaac Mendenhall in the year of our Lord 1870 (Nov. 10). They lived in Reno several years till they had 5 children. Then he bought a saw mill. Run it in Mont Clair. Then he mooved his family to Mont Clair, raise their children. Was very prosperous in business. Traded a great deal an he was elected High Sheriff. Moved to Danville. Served most two terms an will quit quite honorable. They are there yet, will be this year. 3 sons married. They have 2 grandchildren, a son an daughter still single."

Children

1. Charles Thomas Mendenhall: Often known as Charlie, he was born September 14, 1872 in Reno, Indiana. He was a farm, railroad, and sawmill laborer at various parts of his life. On December 21, 1898, he married Ada A. Davidson. They had a stillborn son (1901) and adopted a daughter, Inez (1895). Charles died December 6, 1955 in Indianapolis, age 83.

2. William Wilbert Mendenhall: Often known as Willie, he was born November 10, 1874 in Reno, Indiana. While in Hendricks County, he was a farmer. He married Allie Ray Plummer on December 20, 1899, and the couple had eight children: Wilbert Thomas (1901), Ormal Isaac (1903), Ernest Elbert (1905), Mildred Minerva (1908), Everett Dwight (1910), Joye Wayne (1912), John Wilbert (1914), and Laura Marthena (1917). He moved to Beech Grove after his wife's death, and became a machinist. He died in Indianapolis on December 3, 1966, age 92.

3. Joseph Leetus Mendenhall: Sometimes known as Leetus or Joletis, he was born November 9, 1877 in Reno. As a young man, he was deputy sheriff during the time his father was sheriff in the mid 1900s. He was also a laborer and machinist. On September 25, 1907, he married Lottie Dean Shelor. They had two children: Joseph Harold (1910) and Florence Annetta (1912). He died in Indianapolis on November 16, 1863, age 86.

4. James Nathan Mendenhall: James was born November 11, 1881 in Hendricks County, Indiana. He was a farm laborer and later a machinist. He married Leetha Ethel Booker on April 10, 1920. The couple had no children. He died March 21, 1934 in Perry, Indiana, age 52.

5. Grace May Mendenhall: Often known as Gracie, she was born July 12, 1885 in Hendricks County, Indiana. She married Albert Warren Cronkhite on March 17, 1908. Grace and Albert had three children, Herman Wilber (1908), Glenn Laverne (1911), and Ethel Mae (1914). She died in Beech Grove on June 2, 1915, age 29.
