Peter Sharp has German Roots.

Peter Sharp / Pieter Scherp, son of Georg Scherp and Barbara Schmidt, was born on 10 June 1730 and baptised on 10 December 1730 at the Dutch Reformed Church, Claverack, Columbia County, New York. [1] [2]

Pieter Scharp & Catharina Berreger, Wedding

In October 1762 Pieter Scharp wed Catharina Berreger (Catharina Barringer, daughter of Frederick Barringer and Margaretha Zufeld) at the Dutch Reformed Church in Albany, Albany County, New York Colony. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] To this marriage were born at least the following children, all born in Rensselaerwyck and baptised at the Dutch Reformed Church, Albany, Albany County, New York:

  1. Barbara (Scherp/Sharp) van Alstyn, b. 6 Oct 1765, bapt. 3 Nov 1765;
  2. Frederick Scherp/Sharp, b. 22 Jul 1769, bapt. 20 Aug 1769;
  3. Margaret (Scherp/Sharp) Yager, b. 6 Dec 1776, bapt. 29 Dec 1776. [8] [9]
The above children were named following traditional German/Dutch naming patterns: eldest daughter Barbara after her paternal grandmother Barbara Schmidt, son Frederick after his maternal grandfather Frederick Barringer, and youngest daughter Margaret after maternal grandmother Margaretha Zufeldt.

In 1767 Peter Sharp is recorded serving in the Albany County Militia together with his brothers. [10] [11]

In 1772 Peter Sharp is recorded as owning land in New York Colony. [12]

During the War of Independence Peter Sharp is described as an enlisted man for the State of New York. [13]

In 1794 Peter Sharp and wife Catarina Berringer were in full communion with the Dutch Reformed Church of Wynantskill. [14]

In 1800 Peter Sharp is recorded living in Greenbush, Rensselaer County, New York. [15]

Peter Sharp signed a will dated 29 August 1800 at Greenbush, Rensselaer, New York; it was probated on 24 August 1807. Peter Sharp was buried at the Homestead Cemetery, Greenbush (now North Greenbush), New York. [16]

Peter Sharp's Last Will & Testament

A copy of the last will and testament of Peter Sharp deceased, with the proof thereof recorded August 24th 1807.
In the name of God, Amen. I Peter Sharp of the Town of Greenbush and County of Rensselaer farmer, being weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God, calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and this my last will & testament, that is to say, Principally and first of all I give and recomend my soul into the hands of almighty God that gave it and my body I recomend to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian burial nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and is touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life. I give devise and dispose the same in the following manner and form:
  1. Imprimis, I give and bequeath unto my son Frederick or to his heirs or assigns forever all my farm lying in the town of Greenbush which I now possess with all the building and appurtenances thereunto belonging.
  2. Secondly I give and devise unto my son Frederick all my farming utensils waggons slaigs ploughs Harrow and of whatsoever manner or nature it maybe found on the farm after my decease likewise three geldings and my hunting guns.
  3. Thirdly I give and devise unto my beloved wife Catherine to receive the equal one third part of all the produce which shall be raised on the farm and one room in my dwelling House as long as she shall remain my widow likewise three milk cows and five sheep likewise the negro wench Chriss to serve my wife as long as she wants her.
  4. Fourthly I give devise unto my son Frederick one Yoke of oxen and is to pay all my just debts.
  5. Fifthly I give devise unto my daughter Barbara the wife of Isaac Van Alstyn or to her heirs or assigns the sum of one hundred and twenty five dollars to be paid out of my estate by my son Frederick four years after the decease of my wife likewise one feather bed and bedstead after the decease of my wife.
  6. Sixthly I give devise unto my daughter Margaret the wife of Seaman Yager or to her heirs or assigns the sum of one hundred and twenty five dollars to be paid by my son Frederick out of my estate four years after the decease of my wife likewise one feather bed and bedstead after the decease of my wife.
  7. Seventhly I give and devise unto my son Frederick and my two daughters Barbara and Margaret or their heirs or assigns all my personal estate which maybe found after the decease of my wife which I have not before devised to be equally divided between them share and share alike.
  8. Eighthly I give and devise unto my beloved wife all the hogs which are now in the hog pen likewise one sow one large barrow one small barrow and one boar.
  9. Lastly I nominate constitute and appoint my wife Catherine and Zachariah Barringer, David Barringer to be the executors of this my last will & testament and I do hereby utterly disallow revolk and disannul all and every other former testament wills legacies bequests Executors by me in any ways before named willed and bequeathed ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty ninth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred. Peter Scharp LS [X] his mark. Signed sealed published pronounced and declared by the said Peter Sharp as his last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presence and the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names.
