Biography

Private Solomon Sharp served with Bedford County Militia, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.

Solomon Sharp is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A103018.

Solomon Sharp was born on 1763 in Bedford, Virginia, to Anne Dooley, age 17, and John Schaup, age 23. He was the eldest child of 7 children.

His father John recieved 2230 Acres recorded in Lincoln Co., Kentucky, for service in the Revolutionary War. John never claimed the land but left it to his son Solomon and his heirs. This land was in Anderson Co., Kentucky near his Brother Abraham’s, Warant No. 30305.

Solomon was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and fought in the battle of Cuilfort Court House. Pension No. 9433.^[1]

He came to Mercer Kentucky with his Uncle Abraham Sharp.

He married married his cousin Catherine Sharp (daughter of Abraham) in Mercer, Kentucky, on May 27, 1794, when he was 31 years old.^[2] They had 10 children.

Solomon is on the 1800 Mercer Co., Kentucky Tax list.^[3] , and was on the Kentucky Census in 1800.^[4] He is on the 1810 and 1820 Census in Mercer, kentucky. His Uncle Abraham is also listed on it.^[5][6]

Catherine passed away on 28 Sep 1836, in Mercer, Kentucky at the age of 56.

Solomon Died in 1847 in Kentucky.^[7]

According to family tradition, Indians raided the Sharp homestead while Abraham and his nephew Soloman were away. The cabin was burned and Rebecca and three of her children (Catherine, Mary, and William) were captured.

Another child Pricilla, escaped by hiding in the well. Rebecca’s sister was killed by an Indian as she crossed a stile.

The Indians demanded a ransom in horses for release of the prisoners. Only enough horses were collected for the release of Rebecca and Catherine.

The other two children (Mary and William) were taken to an Indian village north of the Ohio River and were released after several years by a party of white men who attacked and captured the village.

Returning to Kentucky, the party stopped at Corn Island (Louisville), and Mary escaped and returned to the Indian village where she married an Indian chief and raised a family.

William also yearned to return to the Indians, but was watched closely by his family to prevent such an action.

A mention of the Indian attack is mentioned in the Draper’s Manuscript, but dates and details are missing.”
