Joseph Sharp reared his family in Belmont County, Ohio, and about the year 1839 settled on a farm just south of Sugar Grove, Ohio. He became a contractor on the Hocking Canal and built for the state what has been known as "Sharp's Dam" on the Hockhocking River. In 1842, he was elected to the State House of Representatives. He served only one term, and returned to the management of his farm.
