Martha (Sharp) Clawson, age 83, of New Castle, Indiana, died Tuesday at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital following a brief illness. She was born April 27, 1926, in New Castle. Widely known for her caring and joyful spirit, she will be missed by family, friends, neighbors and her community. A 1944 graduate of New Castle High School, she was a secretary at American Security Company and was an Air Force wife when her late husband Richard was mobilized for the Korean War. Later she was secretary to Vice President Robert Hoke at Modernfold Inc. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of New Castle and a former member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a member and former president of Chapter H of P.E.O., and a member of Tri Kappa, the Agenda literary club, and Lady Elks Auxiliary. She joined friends in several bridge clubs, including women's duplicate bridge at the Elks Club. She also enjoyed beating family members and friends at other card games. She was best known to many as a friend and neighbor who was always ready to smile, share a meal, and lend an ear and helping hand. To her extended family, she and her twin sister Mary were the caring, supportive and happy center of family life and celebrations for decades.
She is survived by two sons: Capt. Steve Clawson, U.S. Navy (ret.) of Alexandria, VA, and Dan (wife: Kate) Clawson of Ft. Collins, CO; a granddaughter: Laura Clawson of New York, NY; grandsons: John-Mark Clawson of Chicago, IL, Matthew and Michael Clawson, both of Ft. Collins, CO; a niece: Ann (husband: Don) Bender of New Castle; twin nieces: Susan (husband: Jim) Childs of Cincinnati, OH, and Sally Allen of Indianapolis; a niece: Wendy Wilson of Greenfield; a nephew Bob Wilson of New Castle; great nieces: twins Halle and Karleigh Wilson, both of New Castle; great nephews: Alexander (wife: Molly) Childs of Pittsburgh, PA, Benjamin Childs of Dayton, OH, Mark (wife: Anne) Bender of Indianapolis and John Krausbauer of Portland, OR; her best friend since childhood: Mary Lee Buschmann of Indianapolis, and many other close friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother: Ruth (Harvey) Sharp Fogal; by her husband: Richard Clawson; her sister: Marie Krausbauer, and her twin sister: Mary Wilson Pidgeon. Services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle, with Reverend Tom McGilliard officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday morning, July 11, from 10 a.m. to noon. Memorial contributions may be given to the Henry County Community Foundation for the "Sharp Twins Endowment Fund" to provide resident summer camp opportunities at YMCA Camp Tecumseh, where Martha and Mary shared many happy weeks in their youth and later served as counselors.
