Biography

Johann Georick SCHÄRP was born in 1722 in Germany. He died in 1789 in Orange County, North Carolina.

Johann Georick SCHÄRP was a son of Johannes / Aaron Ernst SCHÄRP (1699 - 1756) and Anna Margaret Johnson, who are buried somewhere in Virginia. His siblings are William (b. 1725), Anna Margaret and Catherine Sharp.

When Johann George came to the United States at age 16, arriving in Pennsylvania in 1738, his name was anglicized as John George Sharp. He married Anna Maria Loy (1717–1777) in about 1748 and they had six children:

  • Aaron Sharp Sr. 1750-1822
  • John Sharp 1753-1830
  • George R. Sharp 1755-1833
  • William W. Sharp Sr. 1765-1842
  • Adam Sharp
  • Philopena N. Sharp 1765-1808

This list of children was taken from FamilySearch profile #L1S9-3WB and may be incomplete. John’s birthplace on this FamilySearch profile is listed as Offenbach am Glan, Offenbach-Hundheim, Kusel, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, but this has not verified.

John died in May of 1789 in Orange, North Carolina and was buried there in Mount Zion Christian Church Cemetery.

Note

Phyllis Efland is often attributed to be his wife, but she was the wife of John Joseph Sharp (b. 1753 in Orange, North Carolina, d. 20 January 1830 in Anderson, Tennessee). John Joseph's father was Isaac Sharp and his mother was Margarette A. Webber.
