DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mount by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mount:

Hello there,

I believe that this profile for James Mountable Sharp may have conflated two separate James Sharps. The census records for James with his wife Sarah and their children, which I'll link below, give his birth location as Tennessee and list him specifically as James M Sharp. However, the James Sharp living in Tennessee in 1850 with Kentuckian Edward and South Carolinian Tabbitha Sharp is supposed to have been born in South Carolina, not Tennessee.

I believe that the James Sharp of this census (and therefore, the son of Edward and Tabitha) is in fact a different James Sharp to the one which married Sarah Clayton and had son Bedford (who is present in the censuses below with father born in Tennessee). Instead, I believe that this James Sharp is instead the James M Sharp present in the same year (1850) born and living in Tennessee to an Isaac and Sarah Sharp. I've also put that census below for reference.

As you can see, not only does the inclusion of the middle initial in the Isaac and Sarah 1850 census support the belief that it is this James who is the husband of Sarah Clayton and father of Bedford (though I am well aware that initials were frequently omitted from census records), but the approximate birth year still matches and now is born in the correct state.

Please feel free to review the censuses below and come back to me with what you think! They all have images attached to them for you to verify the birth state transcriptions should you feel it is necessary. I'm happy to discuss this further, after all, we do this research for the good of the collective family tree :)

Regards, Amy

I don't believe the James M. Sharp who lived in Knox County, Tn. was correct for this family. Different man altogether.
May I ask why? I note that the 1850 census with Isaac and Sarah Sharp is also attached to a James Madison Kellogg Sharp on FamilySearch, however I believe that this is also in error, as prior censuses for James MK Sharp record his birth location as being Kentucky, with both parents born in Tennessee, while the 1850 census shows James M Sharp as born in Tennessee with parents from Tennessee (Isaac) and Virginia (Sarah). Furthermore, James MK Sharp was supposedly born around 1836, which puts him at odds with the given birth date of 1830 in the 1850 census in Knox County.

Even if this is not a compelling reason to believe that James Mountable Sharp may not be the son of Edward and Tabitha, I believe that the actual 1850 census with them suggests that the James Sharp who married Sarah Clayton in Lewis County may not be the same James Sharp in the Edward and Tabitha census in Hickman County. Though the birth locations for Edward and Tabitha match the profiles attached, the census clearly records their son James as being born in South Carolina, and not Tennessee.

I looked at that census and there was no indication that James was born in South Carolina. Maybe a little smudge on the paper, but not ditto. Everything fits for James to be the son of Edward and Tabitha. They lived in Maury and Lewis Counties. My ancestor, James Sharp, lived in Perry County. I believe this is all correct.
