Research Notes

  • Note: the Shaw family of Greenock and Sauchie have no known clan affiliation. They were employed in the Royal court because they held no clan affilation.
  • John Shaw of Sauchie, Laird of Greenock, was born between 1540 and 1545 at Sauchie, Clackmannan Shire, Scotland. He was the eldest son of Alexander Shaw of Sauchie and Elizabeth Cunningham.[6]
  • His cousin was the illegitimate son of James the IV. His elder brother inherited the Barony of Sauchie and its titles. John inherited on his father's death the titles of Western Greenock and Spango, Drumelling and later gifted the farm of Finnart in 1560. [7]
  • Their marital alliance also brought John more land in Ayrshire and Spango outside Greenock.
  • For clarity of the generations below I have outlined each of his children. By the time he died he had land holding spread across the South West of Scotland mainly in Greenock West, Johnstone and Bagarran. These are all mentioned in the land transfers on his death. He fathered at least five daughters and six sons. For sources on each child, look to each profile.

Sons

  1. His eldest son James (see Shaw-7868) inherited the lands of Greenock West where He lived at first. He retained most of the land holdings in the family . He lived firstly in Murdeston House , Greenock , then later moved to Kilmuars near Kilmarnock. He had three other sons that are dealt with in his profile.
  2. Patrick the second son , (see Shaw-13965), was born about 1585, where He became a minister in the scots church at Selkirk. He lived also in Greenock, Kelso and else where. His descendants were notable scientists and academics.
  3. William, the third son (see Shaw-13969), born about 1588, lived on in the family house at Murdestone, Greenock. There is some evidence that he may not have had full faculties as the Sassines are worded to address a child or the like.
  4. Alexander (see Shaw-14084), was born abt. 1580. This is the most elusive of his children. Some say he died with out children or young, others say he have married. More work needs to be put into this child. hence the lack of clarity about if it was five or six boys in the family.
  5. Robert, the youngest son , was born abt. 1592, became laird of Bagarran. He had at least three sons: John, William and Robert. This family appears to have become lawyers and magistrates. Robert's great granddaughter, Elizabeth, founded the Paisley Silk works.
  6. John the Youngest, born 1592, had at least two sons, James and William. He went with Hugh Montgomery to Northern Ireland.

Daughters

  1. Elizabeth (see Shaw-736), born abt. 1560, married Hugh Montgomery and became lady Montgomery.
  2. Isobel (see Shaw-7870), born abt. 1575, married Gavin Lyndsay[8] of of Overschelis .
  3. Marion (see Shaw-7870), born abt. 1577, married a Mr. Campbell of Dovecoat Hall. This i suspect is near Johnstone Renfrew, but it needs to be checked.
  4. Christian (see Shaw-7873), born abt. 1579, married Hugh Montgomery's younger brother High who married her sister Elizabeth above.
  5. Giles (see Shaw-7872), born abt. 1585, married James Crawford of Flattertoun. Flattertoun today is a small farm across the valley from the IBM factory in Greenock.

Was David Cunningham a son of Alexander Shaw.?

I am not sure how John Alexander Shaw of Ayreshire fits into this family. He could not have lived in Greenock then be born in Ayreshire 20 years later.
