Biography

Provincial Archives of N.B., York County Marriage Records, Vol. 1, p. 307 (microfilm reel F137): John Gray of the Parish of Wakefield and Hannah Murphy of the Parish of Northampton were married 11 Oct 1827 by Josiah S. Brown, J.P., in presence of James Jones and George Shaw. [It is my belief that Hannah was widow of William Murphy when she married John Gray. However, some believe that she was a sister of William Murphy, of Robert Murphy who was a witness when Hannah Shaw married William Murphy, and of Andrew Murphy who married Hannah Shaw's sister Phoebe. I have seen no primary documents to support either belief, but when John Gray and Hannah Murphy were married, the witnesses were James Jones and George Shaw, who were Hannah Shaw's brother-in-law and brother. And Dr. Daniel Turner, in his Shaw book, said Hannah, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Phillips) Shaw, married John Gray. Claron Shaw, on the other hand, in his 1872 Book of Records, listed Daniel and Elizabeth Shaw's children, with spouses, and for Hannah Shaw he listed only one spouse, William Murphy, and said he was a brother of Andrew Murphy who married Phoebe Shaw, Hannah's sister.] This from George Hayward Collection
