Samuel Sheets was a farmer who was born in Preston County, West Virginia and then moved to Harrison County about the time his father died; he was about 19 years of age. He probably moved to his brother Jacob's farm initially but then bought his own land and raised a large family. Samuel was married three times. With his first wife Elizabeth Kniseley, he had ten children. With his second wife Rachel Madox, he had three daughters. He married a third time but with no issue to Lucinda Stout.
Samuel's uncle Henry's first son was named Samuel born about 1800. This Samuel was born in PA. The Sheets names repeat in the various families which makes it difficult to track individuals.
Research Notes
There is a DNA Sheets project which is run by Paul Sheats. Samuel Sheets was established 5/20/2016. The two patriarchs are Andrew Sheets ~1780 and Samuel Sheets 1796 of lineage #12.
In the 1830 US Census, Jacob Sheets is listed in the Western District of Harrison County, Samuel Sheets is listed in the Eastern District. In the 1850 US Census, they are both in District 22 of Harrison County. So they must have lived very close to the center of the county.
Most likely buried on his farm. Son Martin L Sheets out lived him by only five years. Martin L is listed as died in Lost Creek.
Grantee Index, S, 155-0002. Beginning in 1821, makes numerous land transactions.
It is Samuel Sheets marriage to Lucinda Stout which gives the first clue as to who Samuel Sheets father was. The marriage record lists Conrad Sheets as Samuel's father.
Conrad Sheets living in Kingwood, WV in 1796 also provides proof that Samuel was born in Kingwood, WV.
