This profile is part of the Sheffield Name Study.

John Sheffield was born about 1725 in Pennsylvania, United States. He may have been the son of Adam Sheffield (1687-1764) and Mary Elizabeth Everitt (1695-1787). According to John's will, one of his sons was named Averitt, who John may have named after his mother's family.

John married Hannah Melton in 1748, likely in Moore County, North Carolina. [1]

John Sheffield, Sr. served as a private in the North Carolina Militia in the American Revolution.[2]

John also served in the War of 1812.[3]

John's will was probated 6 Dec 1794 in Moore County, North Carolina, which infers that he passed away that year. His will confirms his wife, Hannah, and the children listed below. [4]

Research Notes

  • According to the marriage record recorded above, John was born in 1748 in Virginia.
  • The DAR has noted that the service originally attributed to this John Sheffield was actually performed by his son John. Because of this, I have removed the DAR sticker from this profile. DAR notes are now included on John's profile in the PRS (SAR).
  • On Geneanet John's name is given as John Alex Sheffield. This version of his name also shows up on Find-A-Grave.
  • Geneanet gives a birth date of 25 Dec 1725 and a death date of Feb 1796. There is no reference for the birth date and the death date given is like wrong as it does not match the date of his will probate.
  • Find-A-Grave gives John's birth date as 1727 in Pennsylvania and his death date as 1796 in Moore County, North Carolina. The profile manager does not know where John is buried.
