Biography

John was born in 1793. He was the son of Stephen Sheffield and Rachel Cunnabell. He passed away in 1844.

John married Asenath Wells, daughter of John Wells and Prudence Eaton on Nov 12, 1822 at St. John's Anglican Church, Cornwallis Township, Kings, NS. The record of marriage is on a loose note signed by John Sheffield, Canning, NS, March 18th, 1839 in his own hand [2] John's parents "Stephen Sheffield and Rachel his wife" are recorded, as are Asenath's parents, "John Wells and Prudence his wife".

They had at least three children alive at the time of the writing of John's will: Prudence Sophia, Stephen and Mary Elizabeth.

After John's death, his widow and Executrix, Asenath, and James D. Harris, Executor, petitioned the Kings Co. Court of Probate for an extension to allow more time to settle the affairs and estate of her deceased husband. A two month extension was granted to them on Jun 5, 1844 [1]

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Scheffield-2 and Sheffield-185 appear to represent the same person because: Hello Kari,z

I have already proposed a merge of my John Sheffield into Sheffield-185. A match did not come up in my case because there was insufficient info and no sources on 185 but it is a clear duplicate. The spelling of Sheffield with a "c" is not accurate so we should merge all three. Thank you in advance, Morgan

Sheffield-3088 and Sheffield-185 appear to represent the same person because: Hello Douglas; we have a clear duplicate with John Sheffield. The option to add rather than create a new profile did not come up for me because there was no birthdate (?).

Thank you in advance! Progress being made :) Best, Morgan
