Fred was a UAW assembler for the Chrysler Corporation from 1967 to 1995 at the Chrysler Belvidere Assembly Plant in the city of Belvidere, Boone County, Illinois, USA. He retired with 27 years of service in 1995 due to health.[9]
Fred had a part-time job as a grave digger at the Garden Prairie Cemetery. This is when all the graves were dug by hand for $75. After some seasons of tough winter grave digs in frozen ground, he asked for $100 per grave, but was denied by the cemetery board. So, he quit.[10]

Fred was a volunteer for the Garden Prairie Improvement Association. The Improvement Association maintained the Garden Prairie Park, supported the Garden Prairie Chicken Broast,& implemented street lights in the town. It was an early predecessor of small town government for an unincorporated town. Their meetings were held at the Garden Prairie United Church Of Christ. He was president of the Garden Prairie Improvement Association for several years.[11]
Fred was a volunteer fireman for Boone County Fire Protection District #2 for twenty years.[12]
Fred was a "farm league" baseball coach for the Garden Prairie Mustangs for a couple years. Team members included his son, Frederick Sheffield Jr..[13]
Fred and his son Freddie Jr were trained in Taekwondo at the Young Hong Karate Institute in Belvidere, Boone, Illinois, USA by Grand Master Young Hong. Later, they were also trained by Master Jim Pearson at his dojo in Garden Prairie, Boone, Illinois, USA.
