Research Notes

MARRIAGE RECORD SOURCE: Preface of the book where marriage record is found, says that the originals are in the possession of the NC Historical Commission in Raleigh

  • Reserach needed in "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia" by Folks Huxford
  • John was a Revolutionary Soldier - Private in N.C. Militia
  • John came to Virginia from England then moved to Duplin County, North Carolina.
  • He received bounty grant land in Georgia for his service but apparently never moved there. Deed to William Grady from Wright, Bryant, West, and Arthur (all of Laurens County, Georgia) dated March 30, 1813 conveys for $400.00, 2/3 of 293 acres in Duplin County, North Carolina left to them in their father's will.
  • His widow, Elizabeth, moved to Montgomery County, Georgia in 1805 after his death. She participated in the land lottery yet drew no land.
  • Notice in the will "William Grady my wife's son"! This is an important factor in separating the two Ishams.
  • Isham Sheffield 1760 son of John was living in Laurens Co. GA., in 1815 as was William Grady. Isham made a deed dated 9 June, 1815 to William Grady conveying 48 3/4 acres of land in Duplin Co. and being a part of a 293 acre tract devised him by his father, John Sheffield. Deed Book D page 120 Laurens Co. GA.
  • There is a conflict as to where he was born. At Find-A-Grave, it's noted that he was born in Potecasi, North Hampton County, North Carolina. Also, the birth date is different there.
  • The Find-A-Grave Memorial is not a true source as there is no grave marker. Place of burial is unknown.
  • 'John Sheffield is the son of William, according to Findagrave.[10]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Sheffield-4624 and Sheffield-59 appear to represent the same person because: These are certainly duplicates
Marsha Sturdivant and I are working on the William Sheffields living in Georgia in the 1820 Census. Sheffield-110, Sheffield-5074 and Sheffield-4295. Two of these show the father as John Sheffield who was married to Nancy Turner and Elizabeth Graddy. We are looking for proof of which of the 3 Williams is John's son. There are duplicates for the profiles of John and Nancy, but I suggest we leave them as they are for now. eventually, we need to merge them.

I have started a spreadsheet showing all three men and what proof we have gathered for each. If you would like to collaborate and see this spreadsheet, please send me a message.

I would like to have everyone take a look at the 2 children, West and William, attached as children of John Sheffield-59. The are attached to Elizabeth West-12870 who is not the same Elizabeth attached to John Sheffield-59.

Elizabeth West-12870 is attached to John Wesley Sheffield-3428.

I am trying to figure this out, and it makes my head swim, as my grandmother used to say lol. I stopped when I got here, as this is tough. Please see the bio for this FG memorial # 74014768 , it might explain the Elizabeth Graddy dilemma.

My connection is William Sheffield married to Rebecca Lee, son of this John and Nancy Turner. Their son William Sheffield married Rebecca Pike maybe Salters is my double 4th great grandfather. This is the profile I created for them, and stopped. On ancestry, someone is making a distinction between the John Sheffields, as one was from Duplin NC and the other Moore NC. There must also be a distinction made for the Williams, one is in Bulloch married to Mary Abbott and mine is in Pulaski married to Rebecca. (It is so confusing because they call her Peggy, but her name was Rebecca. I can only surmise maybe it was Margaret Rebecca?) William of Pulaski (mine) is the son of John of Duplin. At least, that's what I surmise. As for the West Sheffields, this ancestry individual also found that John of Duplin has a son named West, and that John of Moore did not have a son named West, based on their wills. However, it is also found that John of Duplin had a brother West Sheffield, and the men become conflated. I welcome any help you might offer! What do you think? I can get on discord, I would really like to figure this out. Thank you so much. Marsha

Hi, My head is also spinning. Thanks for the note about the memorial which explains the Graddy and West mixup. I saw that also on one of the profiles I've been struggling with. The only proof given for West was a marriage date, which was the marriage date for Graddy. I was able to change West's surname and merge with the other Graddy-9, but now she is showing with 2 John Sheffilds as husbands. I'm sending you a private message so we can maybe get all of these Sheffield fixed. If anyone else wishes to help, please message me.
Hello :-) I was looking up this John Sheffield as well. Do we have any information on when the Sheffield came here?

If it's any help, the marriage record to Elizabeth Graddy indicates that she was single.

Either way, he wouldn't have married two different Elizabeth Graddys on the same day.

The narrative on FindAGrave (though unsourced, but so are the other pedigrees listed on this profile unless otherwise specified), shows the youngest child of John and Elizabeth as Arthur Sheffield (1790-1864).

Maybe the list of his children by spouse from FindAGrave can be carefully reviewed to see if the two lines can be firmly established by any other records, and then help to better define the two different women that he married in succession and eliminate the misplaced Elizabeth Grady?

Sheffield-1877 and Sheffield-59 appear to represent the same person because: clear duplicate; can be merged now that the parents are fixed

I detached John's parents because Ephraim b. 1755 was both son and father of John.

So is Elizabeth's maiden name GRADDY as confirmed by the excellant research on this profile ? Married September 29, 1779
