Tippecanoe County Deed/Probate records show Rebecca bonded James and his brother Alexander over to a William Ivers as guardian about 1857. Both were noted as over 14 at the time. Neither boy was with Ivers for the 1860 census.
National Archives shows Rebecca Layton applied for pension on 22 Apr 1864 as mother of James Shell(deceased?) for his service in 'D' Company of the IN 40th infantry. This unit formed in Lafayette, Tippecanoe, IN and included James Sparks who had married James Shell, Jr's sister Sarah. James Sparks died at Kennesaw on 22 Jul 1864. James Shell, Jr. supposedly was killed in April of the same year.
This James Shell had a first cousin(from uncle Henry) also named James (L.) Shell who served in the OH 2nd Inf. and also died from wounds suffered during the Civil War. Another first cousin(from uncle Isaac), also named James Shell, served with the 71st OVI and was injured in battle, then went AWOL from the hospital. He was redeemed by his mother on account he was too young to enlist anyway.
