Biography

Elizabeth was born in Virginia, but then moved to Knox, TN(Approx. 200 mile distance) with her father Christian after 1800. Her husband William was born and raised in Montgomery, VA and was a first cousin by her aunt Barbara (Shell) Heavin. He was also a cousin from her mother's side as his father was Sarah (Havens) Shell's first cousin, William Heavin, Sr.(Spelling var.) The notion that the two married illustrates the strong communication between relatives in SW Virginia and Christian's clan in Knox, TN. Elizabeth's brothers William and Lewis married Sallust sisters also from Montgomery County. She also had two nieces by brother John Shell who married Shells from there as well. Elizabeth and William moved to Indiana about the same time as her sisters Lily and Ruth Rector, and her brother Lewis C. Shell. Joining them also in the migration were William's sister Sarah Heavin who married cousin James Sallust, Jr., and William's brother John who married Sarah Wall.

Elizabeth survived past the 1860 census, but her actual date of death is unknown. Grave records for her children indicate she outlived all of them except maybe her son Howard who lived until 1869.
