Biography

Jacob Shellenberger was born November 30, 1804, in Pennsylvania, a son of Martin Shellenberger and Nancy Strickler. In 1827, in Ohio, Jacob married Rebecca Flohr, born May 20, 1809, a daughter of Daniel Joseph Flohr and Mary Rummel. [1]

Jacob and Rebecca are found on the United States Census of 1850, residing in Berlin Township, Mahoning County, Ohio. Others in the household are Maria, Homer, Hiram, Harris, Mary, Freer, and Heandes [Hannah] Shellenberger, and David Kennedy. [2] Jacob and Rebecca are found in 1857, on the Minnesota Territorial Census. Others in the household are Maria, Homer, Hiram, Harris, Mary. Freer. Candace, and Hannah Shellenberger. [3]

On the 1860 Census, Jacob and Rebecca are residing in Pleasant Township, Wabash County, Indiana, with children Mary, Freer, Candace, Hiram and Harris. [4]

Jacob died November 11, 1886, at the age of 81 years, in Wabash County, Indiana and is buried in the churchyard of the South Pleasant Methodist Church, in North Manchester. [5]

Obituary

Jacob Shellenbarger, a man well known by all of the early residents here, died at his home in Pleasant township last Thursday afternoon age 83 years, 9 months, and 23 days. Funeral Sunday at Pleasant, burial at the cemetery adjoining. Deceased at one time, several years ago, was one of the wealthy business men of this place but lost most of his property in unfortunate business transactions, since when he has lived on the farm where he died as an honored citizen, respected by all his friends and neighbors.
