Roll of Honor
Sergeant Ephram Shellenberger was Wounded in Action during United States Civil War.

When Ephram Augustus Shellenberger was born on October 29, 1843, in New Springfield, Ohio, his father John F., was 25 and his mother, Mary, was 31. He married Louise Margaret Clinker on October 19, 1865, in Mahoning County, Ohio. They had four children during their marriage. He died on February 10, 1915, in North Lima, Ohio, at the age of 71, and was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery.[1]

Ephraim Shellenberger (1843-1915) enlisted when he was 18 as a private on 25 February 1862 and was mustered into Company D of the 61st Infantry on the same day. He saw several promotions, initially to first sergeant (no date listed), then to corporal (9 December 1862), and finally to sergeant (1 November 1863). The regiment was bloodied throughout the war, seeing early action at Second Bull Run, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, where Shelleberger was wounded in action, probably during the retreat to Cemetery Hill. A CDV portrait of Shellenberger is published on page 59 of Baumgartner’s Buckeye Blood: Ohio at Gettysburg. In April 1864 the 61st Ohio was reassigned to 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, XX Corps (20th A.C.) where it saw extensive action in the Atlanta Campaign, battles throughout Georgia, and Sherman’s March to the Sea. Afterward, the regiment marched through the Carolinas and was consolidated with the 82nd Ohio Infantry, taking its name, and where Shellenberger was transferred into Co. E. [2]
