Biography

Anne Shelley, born about 1614 in England,[1] sailed to Massachusetts in 1632 on the ship Lyon with her parents Robert and Anne Shelley, and a family known to them, the Coggeshalls. She is described as a servant of John Coggeshall.[2] Also on board the Lyon was probably her future husband, Richard Foxwell (or Foxall). They were among the 123 passengers aboard the Lyon for a journey that took them "twelve weeks aboard and eight weeks from Land's End," leaving London June 22, arriving at Boston Sept. 16.[3]

John Corley's "Emigration to New England on 'The Lyon' in 1832" (Braintree and Bocking [U.K.] Heritage Centre, 1984) lists a "Foxall or Foxwell from Coggeshall, settled in Boston" who sailed on the Lyon in 1632. In his profile for Richard Foxwell, Anderson quotes Rev John Eliot of Roxbury:

"Ann Shelly a maid servant she came to the land in the year 1632 & was married to Foxall, a godly brother of the church of Scituate". Although Anderson finds no record of Richard Foxall or Foxwell before 1634, we can imagine that he was on the Lyon in 1632 with other passengers from Coggeshall, Essex, England.
"LYON, William Peirce, Master, sailed from London June 22 [1632] and arrived September 16 [1632] at Boston. 'He brought one hundred and twenty three passengers, whereof fifty children, all in health. They had been twelve weeks aboard and eight weeks from Land's End." [The Planters of the Commonwealth, Banks]

Anne first joined the church at Roxbury and sat under the preaching of the famous Rev. John Eliot. In April 1634 she transferred to the First Church of Boston.

Admission: 20 April 1634, Admission to the First Church of Boston, Massachusetts, [20th of the second month - year began in March] "Anne Shelley his maidservant [John Coggeshall's]" received members "upon letters of dismission from our sister church of Rocksburie"[2]

She married before 14 June 1635 Richard Foxwell:

"14th June 1635 Brother Foxwell's wife joined Scituate church".
"Anne [Shelley], maid servant to John Coggeshall of Roxbury, afterward wife of Richard Foxwell of Scituate." [4]

Anne's husband Richard was a tailor, but labor was scarce in a new land filled with raw materials. Richard built his own house, the second one constructed in Scituate, by 1634. By 1637 he built another house on the same lot, as their family had two daughters by then. In 1639 Rev Lothrop moved to found Barnsable on Cape Cod, and the Foxwells accompanied him there, where Richard built his third house on about fifteen acres of land. Their closest neighbor was William Bacon, who had a younger brother Samuel living with him. Twenty years later, Samuel would marry Anne and Richard's second daughter, Martha Foxwell.

Died: Before June 1668 in Barnstable, Massachusetts. Anne's husband, Richard Foxwell, died about June 1668 and she is not mentioned in his will, either as beneficiary or executor. [1] It is assumed she died before her husband.

Shelley-1329 and Shelley-501 appear to represent the same person because: Initially attached to the wrong Foxwell profile, Shelley-1329 represents the same person as Shelley-501 (wife of a different Foxwell)

Shelly-17 and Shelley-501 appear to represent the same person because: I believe these are the same person - 501 should have the death date set to "AFT 1668"

I believe the problem is in 1632 someone mistranscribed the ship list as "Mrs Ann Shelley" instead of "Miss". I believe Ann was traveling with her brother Robert Shelley.

Robert Shelley married a maid servant also of John Coggeshall who lived in Boston named Judith Garnett born 1608 who arrived in 1634 on the "Frances". Since his sister Anna also worked for Coggeshall that would explain them meeting.

John Coggeshall was from Halstead a town in England adjacent to Castle Hedingham. I found christening records for a Robert, Anna, Elizabeth and Marye children of a Richard Shelley in Castle Hedingham. Anna 12/6/1601 Elizabeth 11/20/1603 Robert Shelley christ 16 Mar 1605 Marye 1/19/1609 Richard Shelley married Sept 22, 1600 Castle Hedingham Elizabeth Chandler
