Jessie Calvin "Little Daddy" Shelton was born Mar 1849 in Tennessee, USA to Calvin Shelton & Sally Flatt.^[1][2][3][4] There is some question as to his correct name and parents (see Stories Section).

He passed away 08 Nov 1931 in Sherman, Grayson, Texas, USA and is buried at West Hill Cemetery, Pilot Point, Denton, Texas, USA.^[5]

I think this is another case of people, including me, getting two similar people mixed,

It has generally been accepted by my family that Calvin's name was Calvin Joseph. However, the more I research the more I am convinced that his name was Calvin Jessie (or Jesse) or Jessie Calvin. All records I have found use either Calvin or Jessie C. The 1850 Census matches birth location & date and uses Jessie, 1860 uses Calvin. I found Calvin in the 1890 Civil War soldiers census in McLennan County. Shows he was in the Tenn. 4th cavalry Co.K. In the National Archives there is a Jesse Shelton in the 4th Tenn Cavalry. The Texas Death Certificate, accepted by the family, shows Jessie C. One of the problems I have is that the 1850 Census shows his parents as: Preston W Shelton & Matilda Shelton and not Calvin Shelton & Sally Flatt. His Death Certificate sheds no light as to his parents. There could also be the possibility, which I believe, that there are two Sheltons, one Calvin and the other Jessie C, and that I have got their data mixed.

FROM ANOTHER FAMILY MEMBER & RESEARCHER: I feel the same as you Calvin is Jessie. the 1890 census shows Calvin was in Co. I 4th Calvery which was a Union regiment from Overton County. The other Jesse was in Co K 4th Calvery from Coffee County. In the 1850 Overton census there is a Jane Greear with her children and two other women with the last name of Shelton. Then in the 1860 census she is found as Jane Shelton. Her children had been taken from her by the state of Tn. In 1860 you will find Shelton children living with different families. From 1860 to 1930 I have never found Calvin and Jessie in the same census. In Grayson county Jessie has two children Joseph Shelton and Amie Walker both from Tn.

I've been doing more research on Jessie C. I belive his mother was Samantha Jane Shelton. In 1850 I found Jane Greear with Hette, John, Malinda, Mary, and Jessie along with Lucinda Shelton and Edy Shelton. In a separate household was a James Greear. In 1860 I Jane Shelton. In Separate households were Calvin, Malinda, and Isby Shelton. In 1870 I found Samantha with son Spotwood. He is the half brother to John. John's full name is Jacob Johnathon Shelton, Father was Jim Ledbetter and mother was Samantha Jane Shelton. I haven't found any marriage records for Samantha. I did find a marriage record for Eddy C Shelton for 1816 in Virginia.
