Biography

Edwin was born June 5, 1798 in Hanover County, Virginia. He was the son of John Shelton and Nancy Southall.

He passed away November 4, 1874 in Hanover County, Virginia. Edwin was laid to rest in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Richmond City, Virginia, United States. [1]

Research Notes

Edwin was the owner of "Rural Plains" in Hanover County. That property had been farmed by the Sheltons, and by enslaved and other persons, since the early 18th century. The family home there was built about 1725. The remaining Shelton property of about a hundred acres, and the home, are owned today by the National Park Service as the Totopotomy Creek Battlefield unit of the Richmond National Battlefield Park.

The home was the site of the Federal headquarters during the Battle of Totopotomy Creek, fought on 30-31 May 1864, largely on the Shelton family property. The structure suffered significant damage from Confederate artillery, especially since its roof was being used by the Federal Signal Corps to send messages. Edwin's family, including his wife Sarah, spent the battle sheltered in the home's basement.

Edwin was the son of Col. John Thomas Parks Shelton. He married Sarah Elizabeth Oliver in Hanover County on 4 September 1827. They had at least seven children: Harriett Ann, Mary Eliza ("Ella"), Edwin Turner, Sarah Ellen, Frances Foster, Emma Edwina, and Walter Mitchell.

His remains, and those of other family members, were disinterred from a family burial plot at Rural Plains and moved to Hollywood in 1952. [1]
