"Mrs. Lula Mae Speck, the wife of John Jackson Speck of the Highland community, died at her home December 20 after an illness of six months. She had been a faithful member of the Missionary Baptist Church for more than 30 years, affiliated with the Union Academy Congregation. Her maiden name was Lula Mae Shelton, being a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.(Nancy France) Spotwood Shelton, and was born in the community where she died. Surviving are her husband and the following children:

1. Cordell Speck
2. Mrs. Noble Hicks Bilbrey (Nancy Avo Speck)
3. Mrs. Bassell Phillips
4. Mrs. Boyd Miller, all of Overton County.
5. Claude Speck of Leesburg, Fla.

Funeral services were held by the Rev. John Phillips of the Missionary Baptist Church at the Oakley cemetery Friday with burial at the same place." ^[1]
