Disputed Origins

It is my belief that Mark Shelton is not the son of Stephen Shelton and Rhoda Green. I believe he was the son of Hezekiah Shelton. Other than the presence of Mark Shelton in Giles County, Tennessee in 1850 at the same time the widow Rhoda Shelton was there, there is no evidence connecting Mark as son of Stephen Shelton. No records have been found placing Stephen Shelton and Mark Shelton in the same place at the same time. However, from 1805 until at least 1840 Mark Shelton is found in the company of Hezekiah Shelton, his brothers and his children. Shirley Dalton 16:06, 24 March 2015 (EDT)

  • Mark Shelton and wife Susanna Luttrell left Lincoln County, TN for Lauderdale Co., AL before 1814.

  • Both Mark Shelton and Jesse Littrell remained in Lauderdale County until 1840.

Biography

Mark was born about 1784, probably in Henry County, Virginia.

Hezekiah Shelton and his sons, Anderson, Mark, Ralph, and Drury, and daughter Frances, left Virginia about 1798/99 for Kentucky. About 1802, most of the family moved on to Tennessee. They are in Claiborne County, Tennessee where Hezekiah, his wife Jane, and several children of Hezekiah become members of the Big Springs Primitive Baptist Church in 1802. But the next year they are moving on. In June 1803 "Brother Hesekiah and Jane Shelton, Frances and Drury Shelton and Anderson Shelton dismist by letter."[1]

Mark Shelton is "received by experience" into the Big Springs church in March the second Saturday 1803 (12 March 1803). February the first day 1804, the church examined the conduct of Mark Shelton, "and found him gilty of horseracing on the Sabbath Day and at another time for which the church exclude him."[1]

The family has moved back into Kentucky by 1805.

Mark is next found in records when he married Susanna Luttrell on 14 February 1805 in Adair County, Kentucky.[2] Frances Shelton, daughter of Hezekiah Shelton, married Jesse Littrell 16 June 1806 in Adair County, Kentucky. Hezekiah consented to the marriage.

About 1808/09 Mark Shelton, Anderson and Drury Shelton, Jesse Littrell and his wife Frances Shelton, as well as other members of the Shelton and Luttrell families moved into Lincoln County, Tennessee.

On 27 August 1811 the Lincoln County, Tennessee, Court ordered "that Mark Shelton is to be allowed six dollars pr month for keeping Tyre Harris orphan boy until next County Court whole amount eighteen dollars. - Phillip Koonce, Eli Garrett, Robert Higgins JP."[3]

On 25 November 1811 "Anderson Shelton being the lowest bidder has taken Tyre Harris Idiot to keep him and maintain him twelve months for sixty seven dollars and gave for his security Mark Shelton and William Y. Higgins in the sum of one hundred thirty four dollars. Issd. 26 Nov. 1812."[3] Anderson Shelton is the son of Hezekiah Shelton, born about 1783 in Virginia. He remained in Lincoln County, TN until his death in 1861.

James Shelton (1734-bef 1815), a brother of Hezekiah Shelton, also settled in Lincoln County, Tennessee with his family. His daughter, Clary Shelton, married Jesse Littrell 9 August 1798 in Garrard County, Kentucky. After her death about 1805, Jesse married her cousin Frances Shelton, daughter of Hezekiah Shelton, 16 June 1806 in Adair County, Kentucky. If Mark Shelton is also a child of Hezekiah, then Frances is his sister. Jesse and Frances (Shelton) Littrell moved to Lincoln County, Tennessee about the time that James Shelton and Mark Shelton did.

Mark Shelton left Lincoln County about 1812/13. According to later census records, Mark's son James was born in Alabama in 1814. Mark and his family have not been located on the 1820 census but in 1830[4] and 1840[5] they are living in Lauderdale County, Alabama.

Jesse Littrell owned land in Lincoln County, Tennessee which he sold to Thomas Luttrell on 10 April 1818[6] about the time he and his family moved on to Lauderdale County, Alabama. The exact date of the move is unknown, but Jesse's oldest known son Alfred was born 1812 in Lincoln County; next known child John was born 1819 in Lauderdale County.

Mark's wife, Susanna, died about 1825 and Mark married Elizabeth Howard on 21 September 1825 in Lauderdale County, Alabama.[7][8] Mark Shelton remained in Lauderdale County until about 1848 when he purchased land in Giles County, Tennessee. Jesse Littrell died in Lauderdale County 17 March 1840.

By 1850 Mark, Elizabeth and family have settled in Giles County, Tennessee. They are on the 1850 census there.[9] Note: Sampson Shelton (b 1829) and Mary Shelton (b c 1831) are children of Mark and second wife, Elizabeth.

Mark Shelton died about July 1853 in Giles County. His estate was settled in March 1854. Children named as petitioners in the settlement: Jane Shelton Marshall, Lucinda Shelton Walker, Anna Shelton Ezell, Horatio Shelton, Mark Shelton, Jr., Hawkins Shelton, James Shelton, Jacob Shelton, John Shelton, Sampson Shelton, Ritta Shelton Glover, Mary Ann Shelton Sturgeon. His wife Elizabeth is not named in the settlement; she may have died.
