Biography

Anna was born about 1809 in Kentucky. She is the daughter of Mark Shelton and Susanna Luttrell. She passed away after the date of the 1860 census (1 June 1860) in Sumter County, Alabama. Samuel is listed as a widower on the 1870 census.

Anna marred Samuel Ezell on 31 October 1829 in Lawrence County, Tennessee.[1]

Census records for Samuel have not yet been located prior to 1850. In 1850 Samuel and wife Ann are living in Sumter County, Alabama. Samuel is a farmer, age 46, born in South Carolina. In the household are children:

  • Pleasant Ezell, age 20, AL
  • Lifus Ezell, age 16, AL
  • Calvin Ezell, age13, AL
  • Geo W Ezell, age 12, AL
  • Martha Ezell, age 10, AL
  • Elmira J Ezell, age 8, AL
  • William D Ezell, age 4, AL
  • James Ezell, age 2, AL[2]

Samuel and Anna are still in Sumter County, Alabama on the 1860 census. Samuel is a Farmer with land valued at $400 and personal property worth $200. He is listed as age 50 (b 1810), born in Tennessee. Next door are sons Calvin, Lifus and Pleasant with their families. In Samuel's household are children:

  • Geo Ezell, age 22, AL
  • Martha Ezell, age 20, AL
  • Jane Ezell, age 18, AL[3]

Research Notes

Anna is not the Hannah Ezell, wife of Samuel Ezell, who died in July 1882 and is buried in New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery, Haleyville, Winston County, Alabama. The grave marker states Hanna was age 51 at date of death. This would give a birth year of about 1831.

The 1882 death date is frequently used for Anna in online family trees, but it is incorrect. Hannah is a totally different person from Anna Shelton Ezell. Please do not change Anna's death date to July 1882.
