Biography

Birth and Parents

Ralph Shelton, Esq., of Broome, Norfolk[1][2] He may have been born at Broome, Norfolk where his father had property. He was old enough to be executor of his mother's will in 1542[3] so he was probably of age then: his birth date has been estimated as about 1520.
Father: Ralph Shelton, Esq., of Broome and Norwich, Norfolk (died October 1538), son of Ralph Shelton, Knt., and Margaret Clere.[1][2][3]
Mother: Mary Brome, daughter and co-heiress of Gilbert Brome of Broome; widow of John Jenny, Esq., of Hardwicke. Mary, née Brome, died 29 August 1540.[1][2][3]

Wives and children

Ralph married twice. His first wife was Prudence Calthorpe, daughter of Edward Calthorpe, Esq., by his wife Thomasine, daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Gavell.[3] They married at Kirby Cane, Norfolk on 26 January 1544/5: [4] [1] [2]
[[Anno Dni 1544] Raphe Shelton gent was maried to Prudence Calthorpe gentlewoma[n] the xxvj of January

They had seven children:

  • Richard Shelton,[1][2] baptised on 2 November 1545[3]
  • Edward Shelton, Gent.,[1][2] who died in 1589[3]
  • Richard Shelton (again),[1][2] baptised on 7 March 1555[3]
  • John Shelton, Gent,[1][2] baptised on 12 April 1557[3]
  • Thomasine Shelton, married (1) Thomas Uvedale, Gent., (2) Charles Croft, Esq.[1]
  • Grace Shelton, baptised on 20 August 1554 [3] and married John Thurton, Gent.[1]
  • Frances Shelton,[1] baptised on 18 October 1562[3]
Prudence was buried at Broome on 23 October 1562.[1][2]
Ralph's second wife was Cecily Steward, daughter of Augustine Steward by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of William Rede Esq. (Cecily was the widow of John Pickerel when she married Ralph). They probably married in Norfolk where both lived. They had two children:
  • Ralph, baptised on 14 September 1567 and buried on 25 October 1573[3]
  • Mary, baptised on 1 January 1568/9 and married William Cooke of Lynsted, Suffolk[3]

Death

Ralph died in 1592, leaving a will dated 31 October 1592 that was proved 25 November 1592.[1][2][3]
Ralph's widow, Cecily, was buried 13 March 1612. She had requested burial at Brome in her will, dated 10 April 1610,[1] proved 28 March 1612.[3][5] (Richardson mistakenly gives the probate date as 25 March.[1][2])

I have created a profile for second wife Cicelie Steward / Wood / Pickerell / Shelton here https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steward-3447 She did not have a profile on WT before. It is not yet complete, but it shows my workings so far. If it is acceptable to the MCP, please connect her and adopt her if you wish.

Correction to the probate date in Cicelie's will stated in the biography above - it was the 28th March 1612 (xxviij) , not the 25th, as shown in the will image here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSN8-17HR-P?i=29&cat=278818

Thanks. I have connected Cecily's profile, and added an "after” marriage date (based on the death date of Ralph’s first wife) and probable county. The Magna Carta Project does not seek to manage spouses' profiles unless the spouse is in a Magna Carta Trail of their own.

I believe there was another daughter Anne who married Charles Cornwallis. Edited to add, not a daughter she is a widow, just looked at licence again.

Marriage licence here:

Anne has a profile at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Barrow-127. She is referred to on p. 347 of Bulwer's edition of the 1563 Norfolk Visitation, https://archive.org/details/visitationnorfo01dashgoog/page/n395/mode/2up. Her first husband was a different Ralph Shelton, who, on a quick look, may not yet have a profile.

There were several Ralph Sheltons in Norfolk around this time.

Shelton-2272 and Shelton-708 appear to represent the same person because: Same person, same child.

Hi Doug, Could you add the Magna Carta Project to the Manager list? This is so that we can continue to watch over and protect the trail. (Profiles with the project box are requested to be added as managers)

See WikiTree-36 for how to add it.

Hi Doug, I am with the Magna Carta Project and I will be working on this and other profiles, while establishing a trail from Gateway Ancestor, Col. Christopher Calthorpe and Surety Baron, Richard de Clare. I will be editing the profile to meet the standards of the Magna Carta Project.
