Research Notes

Name Variations - Avy; Avarilla, Averilla Shelton
Little is known about the early Duncan wives. No original source records have been located to confirm birth or marriage records. It appears that some erroneous information may have been published, and perhaps republished/reported, making the “actual facts” obscure These dates need further research/clarification before taken as "fact".

Avarilla, Ava, et al, are not listed in the will of John Shelton filed in 1804 in Pittsylvania Co VA, in my possession. There was a John Chilton (aka Shelton) who died in North Carolina with a son who moved to PIttsylvania County, Virginia, and the two John's are sometimes confused or conflated. I am not aware of all that John's children, but she is not the child of John Shelton and unknown wife. There is no wife mentioned in his will either. Children listed in John Shelton d. 1804 Pittsylvania Co Virginia were: Jane, wife of William Lewis, Claiborne, Charlotte (m. Willis Shelton), Martha (Tucker), William, Lucy (Hurt), Lettice (m. Abraham Shelton), Nancy (White), Joel, Abraham, Mary (Poore), Frances (Payne). In this will, Jane was left one shilling, which in the estate settlement, was claimed by her husband, William "Meadow Billy" Shelton. "Wills of Pittsylvania County Virginia, Book 2, in my possession and Abstracts of the Williams of Pittsylvania County Virginia" by Mike Williams, in my possession.
