Revolutionary War

Chrispinn was captain of a Pittsylvania militia company in 1767 under Col. John Donelson, who later floated past Lookout Mountain en route to settling Middle Tennessee. When Camden Parish was formed in 1767, Chrispean and his son, Abraham, "subscribed to be conformable to the Doctrine & Discipline of the Church of England by Law Established." In 1778, he was promoted to Major. Crispen had six sons who served in the Revolutionary War. Eliphaz Shelton was captain of a unit that marched to the relief of Gen. Nathaniel Greene at Guilford Courthouse.

Abraham Shelton, Daniel Shelton, Gabriel Shelton and Crispen Shelton and others sympathized with and Bostonians pledged to give their monies and lives. They were appointed to the Pittsylvania County Freeholders Committee of Safety (Virginia) formed 26 January 1775.[11] Crispen served on the Pittsylvania Commission for the trial of tories, and Crispen and Abraham were on a Court of Inquiry that administered the Oath of Allegiance in 1777

During the Revolutionary War most of the Pittsylvania Sheltons were in active official or military service, against Indians, tories and the British. James Shelton and Eliphas Shelton were militia Captains in Henry County. Daniel Shelton and Gabriel Shelton were Captains, Spencer, Beverly and Elisha Lieutenants, and Armistead and Vincent were Ensigns in Pittsylvania. Five of the latter were appointed the same day, Sept. 27, 1775. In 1778 Daniel Shelton became a Major. Captain Gabriel Shelton, with his brother Vincent as Ensign, marched his company of Pittsylvania militia to the battle of Guilford Court House, North Carolina, and fought against the British on March 15, 1781.

Property and Residences

After his marriage to Letitia in Middlesex County, Virginia, Crispin along with his brother Ralph settled in Essex County, Virginia. After some years these Sheltons turned toward Amelia County nearly 100 miles west and south. By 1764, Crispin was in Pittsylvania County, Virginia with several brothers and their families.

Research Notes

BIOGRAPHY: 4. Crispen b. 01 Apr 1713 Middlesex Co., VA. (Christ Church Parish Records), d. 29 Oct 1787 Pittsylvania Co., VA., m. Letitia UNKNOWN c1733, and later a Mary BAUFORD.

The Bauford surname was provided by Millie, E-mail , her source unknown. A marriage record is found in [20] This record shows that Gabriel Shelton also married a Mary Beuford..surety Reddick Shelton..she signed her own consent..married by Rev. Thomas Payne. You can click here to read an entry at GenForum by Janet Hunter

<[1]> pertaining to this line. Interesting too, is the following E-mail sent by Jan Shelton Nixon Sept. 2000: "I am lead to believe that Gabriel's wife Mary Buford was Mary Waller Buford. Following is correspondence from a Lewis researcher: " Miller correctly notes that Gabriel Shelton's second marriage was to Mary Buford on 29 Jun 1794. In my opinion Mary Buford was born Mary Waller. This opinion is based on the following records:

The Will of Major Waller, written 23 Jan 1793, and probated 11 Dec 1794, in Nottoway Co., VA names wife Elizabeth Waller, his daughters, Susannah Parham (who married James Parham), MARY BUFORD, Elizabeth Ellis, Christianna Bennett, Dicey Waller, and his sons John, William, Hampton, Garred, and Major Waller.
An Order Book entry for the Nottoway County Court for 7 May 1796, names the following litigants:

Susannah Parham GABRIEL SHELTON and MARY his wife William Ellis and Eliza his wife Richard Bennett and Christianna his wife John Waller Garred Waller-Exors of Major Waller, dec'd. VS William Waller Hampton Waller Dicey Waller- Infants and orphans of Major Waller, dec'd.".

Jan continued her thoughts: It is interesting that Major John Waller (1) signed the bond for Ralph Shelton who married Mary Pollard (see above notes) and (2) is the father of one of Gabriel's wives. Coincidence?...or family connections? Also interesting is that Gabriel and Mary were married by Rev.Thomas Payne as I think Gabriel's mother Lettice was a Payne, dau. of a Thomas. The problem area here is I have 3 Thomas Paynes and trying to sort the lot." We certainly thank Jan for these tantalizing comments. More research in this area is needed though.

From the ROOTS-L mailing list for SHELTON surname: Crispin Shelton sold two portions of his 620 acres in 1746, 155 acres to Henry Bueford of Amelia and 203 acres to James Beuford of Orange County. The deeds place the land ....on the south side of Rocky Creek in the forks of Nottaway....and recite that....Letice his second wife, joined Crispin in the sale. Ralph Shelton and Benjamin Shelton signed both deeds as witnesses. Henry Buford and William Buford were witnesses to the father Ralph's will in Middlesex in 1733 (posted by Janet Hunter, June 2001)

Sherif of this County, Abraham Shelton and William Ward are admitted his deputy sherifs who came into Court and took the Oaths to his Majesty's person and Government and repeated and Subscribed the Test and then took the Oath of deputy Sherif.

Old Pittsylvania included not only the Pittsylvania County of today but also the present Henry and Patrick and part of Franklin. Pittsylvania was created in 1767 from Halifax, and Halifax in 1752 from Lunenburg County.

When the Lunenburg lands were processioned in 1760, this notation was made, “Ralph Shelton’s land not processioned, want of attendance,” Bell’s Cumberland Parish, p 508. His residence was still the Amelia land not far away, but even then he may have been venturing further west. On Feb. 22, 1763, Ralph sold his Amelia land - 686 acres on the lower side of Snales Creek to Richard Burks. Amelia County Deed Book 8, p. 474 John Shelton witnessed the deed. Shortly thereafter, Ralph, and then Ralph and Richard Burks, were sued for debt by Liddall Bacon and Richard Clough, executors of Samuel Jordan. Evidently Ralph’s land mortgage had not been paid off. Judgment was awarded by the Amelia court for 52 pounds and 7 shillings, with interest at 5% from Nov. 1, 1756 E. P. Valentine Papers p. 44.

July 21, 1763, Ralph Shelton bought of Darby Callahan of Orange County, North Carolina, a tract of 400 acres on both sides of the South Fork of Mayo River, price 70 pounds. Halifax County Deed Book 4, p. 357 Then in Halifax, this land was successively in Pittsylvania, Henry and Patrick Counties, located not far from the present county-seat town of Stuart. Ralph and some of his family probably moved soon to this land 125 miles west of Amelia.

Crispin Shelton was in Pittsylvania co on Aug. 15, 1764, he received a grant of 1515 acres on both sides of the North Fork of Panther Creek in Halifax County. Virginia Land Office Book 36, p. 589; Amelia County Deed, Book 7, p 527; and Deed Book 14, p 183. Panther Creek is a small stream in present Pittsylvania County. Crispin and some of his family moved to his new land. He continued to own his Amelia land until October 20, 1777, when he and wife Letice, of Pittsylvania County, deeded it to Peter Lampkin - 262 acres of his original 1743 purchase from Matthew Smart plus 100 acres he had bought in 1761 from Thorton Pryor. Benjamin and Leonard Shelton, Stith Bolling, William Osborne Jr. and John Finney witnessed the 1777 deed.

The Sheltons are in the first tax lists of Pittsylvania, taken soon after the new county was organized in June 1767.[26]

  • John Hanby’s list: Eliphes Shelton.
  • -Shelton
  • Ralph Shelton Sen.

  • Gabriel Shelton, Abraham Payne.
  • negroes Zachery and Vilet.
  • Lewis Shelton.
  • negro Patt.
  • Abraham Shelton, Edgecomb J. Willliams.
  • John Wilson’s list: William Shelton.

The Sheltons of Pittsylvania - Ralph with four of his eleven sons, Eliphaz, Palatiah, Ralph and one whose name is lost, John; and Crispin with four of his eight sons, Abraham, Lewis, Gabriel and Spencer. William Shelton of John Wilson’s list, owning land on Dan River, we do not yet identify. The other four brothers - Benjamin, John, James and Daniel - in 1767 were probably still back in the vicinity of Amelia or Lunenburg.

I see a lot of conflicting information regarding his place of death. Even though he owned land in Pittsylvania, it doesn't appear he actually died there. It seems like he died in Amelia?? He even owned land in North Carolina.

I haven't been able to find information on his marriage to the mother of Elisha. I noticed that Crispin's grandson, Elisha, was born in South Carolina.

Can someone look into this? Thanks.

Shelton-3238 and Shelton-355 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate as the same details, daughter Elizabeth may also be duplicated, but there is not enough evidence to be sure.
