John Wesley Shepherd was born July 20, 1826, in Huntsville, Alabama.[1] He is the son of Levin Shepherd and Katherine Ebersohl.
John graduated from Yale in 1844 and was admitted to Bar in 1847. He moved to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1851 where he was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Alabama on January 8, 1852. He was appointed reported of the Supreme Court, under the code of 1852, and remained in that position until 1868.
John married Mary Elizabeth Sommerville in September 1854 in Montgomery.
He served as clerk of the Alabama Supreme Court from February 1864 to January 1, 1866. He was reappointed as reporter for the Supreme Court in 1879 and continued in this role until his death, publishing "Shepherd's Digest of the Alabama Reports".[2]
John Wesley Shepherd died May 1, 1894, in Montgomery, Alabama. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Montgomery.[1]
