Biography

Muriel was born in 1887. She married Harold James Copley in Tasmania in 1919, and they moved to South Australia. She passed away in 1963.^[1]

Muriel Shepherd joined the Australian Army Nursing Service on 12 November 1915, but formally enlisted on 29th March 1916 while working at the first Australian General Hospital in Ismailia, Egypt. She was 5 feet 7 inches tall, 140 lbs, with a dark complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. Muriel moved to Wimereux, France in February 1917. She contracted a mild case of German measles and spent 2 weeks as a patient in Boulogne in late march and early April 1917, before returning to Wimereux. In December 1917 Muriel had 2 weeks leave in Paris. She returned with influenza and was transferred to Southwell Gardens Hospital in London. Muriel was discharged from hospital on 13 March 1918, it is not clear if she returned to France or stayed in England. She was "recalled by Defence Cable" on 28 August 1918 and returned to Australia on the "Medic" on 11 October 1918. She was discharged on 4 April 1919.^[2]

Date of birth uncertain - enlistment record has age of 28 years and 3 months on 29 March 1916, however discharge papers have date of birth as 5 November 1887.
