As per 1900 census, house 165, family 167. The Keota tombstone gives him a birthyear of 1854. The 1910 census implies a birthyear of 1858.
Federal land records for Randolph Co, Arkansas, show that David M Shepherd purchased 160 acres of land (sec 15, T21N, R1E) on 6 March 1891. Two other small plots seem to have also been purchased (sec 15, T21N, R1E and sec 10, T21N, R1E both at “zero” acres). (Sections 10 and 15 are adjacent sections.)
It would seem that David and Frances married around 1889 shortly before the birth of their first son, Carlos, who was born the following year. They purchased farmland the year after that in 1891.
A second son, A.W., was born in 1894. In that same year, the family moved to Van Buren County. (As per Carlos’ biography in a Stigler newspaper.) Presumably, David sold his Randolph land and purchased another farm in Van Buren County which is about a hundred miles to the west and south of Randolph County. Since David’s mother, Rebecca, bought her Van Buren land in 1901, it would seem that David moved to be near his mother. In 1905, Isaac Shepherd purchased 160 acres in Van Buren county. Isaac’s land was adjacent to Rebecca’s in section 21.
In 1914, sons Carlos and A.W. moved to Keota with their wives. David and Isaac seem to have either moved with them or shortly thereafter since they are both buried in Keota Cemetery.
In 1920, the US census has David living with Carols and family in/near Keota.
