Biography

Lucy Shepherd was born in 1866 in Stogursey, Somerset, England to Joseph Shepherd and Susan (Perrett) Shepherd. Her birth was registered in Williton, Somerset in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Perrett.[1]

Lucy Shepherd, residing in Dulcott, aged 2 years, daughter of Joseph, a carpenter, & Susan, was christened on 14 Jan 1869 at St Cuthberts in Wells, Somerset.[2] Her sisters Fanny (age 5) & Annie (an infant) were christened on the same day.

In 1871 Lucy Shepperd (age 4) lived at Dulcote in Wells with her father Joseph (30, Carpenter), mother Susan (31), and two sisters: Fanny (7) and Annie (2).[3]

In 1881 Lucy Shepherd (age 14, Scholar) lived in Dulcote with her father Joseph (40, Carpenter), mother Susan (41), and four sisters: Fanny (17, Dressmaker), Annie (12, Scholar), Alice (9, Scholar), and Emily (7, Scholar).[4]

Lucy Shepherd (age 24, Spinster, residing in Dulcote, daughter of Joseph Shepherd, Carpenter) and Walter Elson (age 23, Bachelor, French Polisher, residing in Bristol, son of William Elson, Furniture Broker) were married on 5 Oct 1890 at St Cuthberts, Wells - the witnesses were Louis Elson & Annie Shephard.[5] The marriage was registered in Wells in the last quarter of the year.[6]

Lucy and Walter had four children:

  1. Mabel Annie Elson (1891-1930)
  2. Leslie Norman Elson (1895-1916)
  3. Doris Maud Elson (1900-)
  4. Donald Frederick Elson (1907-1996)

In 1891 Lucy Elson (age 24) lived at 19 Stanley Hill in Bedminster, Somerset with her husband Walter (23, French Polisher).[7]

In 1901 Lucy Elson (age 34) lived at 25 Wells Road in Bristol, Glousestershire with her husband Walter S (33, Fancy Toy Dealer) and three children: Mabel A (9), Leslie N (5), and Doris M (1), as well as her sister Emily Shepherd (26, Shop Assistant Fancy Toy Dealers).[8]

In 1911 Lucy Elson (age 44) lived at 6 Grove Park Avenue in Brislington, Somerset with three of her children: Leslie Norman (15, Junior Clerk for Timber Merchant), Doris Maud (11, School Girl), and Donald (3 years 6 months) - Lucy had been married for 20 years, and 4 children had been born in her marriage (all still living).[9] Her husband Walter Senior Elson (45, Laundry Manager) was a boarder at Wells Cottage in Kingsbridge, Devon.

In 1939 Lucy Elson (born in 1866) lived at 3 Montrose Park in Bristol - also in the household were her husband Walter S Elson (1866), son Donald F Elson (1907), and sister Annie Shepherd (1868).[10]

Lucy Elson passed away on 1 Feb 1940, aged 73 years. Her death was registered in Bristol in the first quarter of the year.[11]

"ELSON Lucy of 3 Montrose Park Brislington Bristol 4 (wife of Walter Senior Elson) died 1 February 1940 at the Royal Infirmary Bristol Administration Bristol 6 May to the said Walter Senior Elson antique dealer and Donald Frederick Elson commercial clerk. Effects £1876 1s. 3d."[12]

Lucy's husband passed away in 1957:

  • "ELSON Walter Senior of Christmas Steps and of 3 Montrose park Brislington both in Bristol died 26 May 1957 at 3 Montrose park Probate Bristol 26 August to Donald Frederick Elson office manager. Effects £4162."[13]
