Biography

On Oct. 9, 1853 Henry [Troxel] married, second, Mary Shepherd, the daughter of John C. and Elizabeth (McDaniel) Shepherd. Her maternal grandparents were James and Margaret (McClain) McDaniel. Mary was born July 11, 1834 in Darke County, Ohio an died Jan. 25, 1901 in Pottawatomie County, Okla. Their final days were spent on the old Troxel farm located one half mile east and three miles north of the Red Oak Cemetery. This cemetery is located near Tribbey, Okla, near the west edge of the county and is almost due east of Noble, Oklahoma.

In 1860 Henry and his second wife, Mary, were found in Richland County, Sylvan Township, Wisconsin, post office Sylvan, Wisc. On July 26, 1860, listing 2051-1782, as follows: Henry, 35, born Ohio, a farmer; Mary, 25, Ohio; Jacob 12, Ind.; David, 10, Ind.; John, 5, Wisc.; Elizabeth, 3, Wisc.; and Catherine 10/12 (10 months), Wisc. Henry and Mary left Wisc. Before 1864, and in the 1870 census they are found in Macon County, Ill., Oakley Township, post office Oakley, Illinois, July 22, 1870, page 4, listing 26-26, as follows: Henry, 45, Ohio, Farmer; Mary, 36, Ohio; John 15, Wisc.; Elizabeth, 12, Wisc.; Catherine, 10, Wisc.; Daniel, 8, Wisc.; Leonard, 6, Ill.; Noah, 4 Ill.; and Joseph, 1, Illi.

Previous records stated that they had moved to Texas in 1876 and then on to Clay County, Texas in 1878. The census for Clay Co. was searched several times checking for them, but to no avail. One day I received a phone call stating that they had been found in Wilbarger County, Texas, page 2, Enumeration District 183, on July 5, 1880, they were listed as follows: Henry, 55, Ohio, farmer, father born Pa., mother born Pa.; Mary 46, Ohio; John 24, Wisc.; Noah 14, Ill.; Samuel 7, Ill,; William 4, Ill.; and Jennetta 9, Ill. The various census records proved names and ages of all of their children except Andrew and Mary M. Henry’s family was found in all four available census years.
